hi there. im a carpenter  but do a bit of welding occasionally. usually just for myself. I mostly make doors  for sheds or carts for tools etcI weld in an open shed that usually has the tractor and trailer in. there is only a gravel floor  so anything on wheels wont workI would love one of those tricked out tables you see here with the thick topsI am thinking about making a 8 foot by 4 foot  ( or bigger) steel frame  out of 40mm box then weld some kind of hinging mechanism to all the frame to twist . then put some kind of adjustable legs so that I can flatten the table I know this isn't ideal but it would be a lot better than the thrown together bench I have been using. the saw horses and timber across them is all right but has its problems. the last door I made I set everything up then went in for tea . my father then moved one of the sawhorses and put it back but the whole lot was twisted . total disasteranyone try anything like this
Reply:8 by 4 is very big table. A knockdown table may not be advisable due to it's weight. Do you have space in the shed to place a permanent table since the floor is gravel?
Reply:the shed is maybe 20 feet by 14 but stores a tractor , trailer, topper, and sometimes other similar stuff. there is very little room in there to put anything permanently. I put a bench on the wall for a cheap drill press and as a place to put offcuts under it . that is nearly in the way and it only sticks out 28 ". I don't make anything really heavy . this frame would only be a surface to put a surface on. maybe plywood . having it on hindging points would allow me to take it apart byt also adjust each corner to make it flat.
Reply:http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...0188&showall=1the first few post has pictures of a table that mounts into the wall. You can fold the table up. The main issue with this configuration is that you can't move the table. I am not sure on the weight of the loadyou are handling. Wood and metal is a completely different item. For my wood work I have a wooden table. For metal the top needs to be metal to conduct electricity. You can save on weight for the frame being made from wood. If the tabletop is this dimension4 x 8 , 1/2 thick weights 650 pounds......http://www.calculatoredge.com/matwei...erial%20wt.htmGenerally ppl use heavy top for pounding. You can use 1/8 thickness for light welding. Use the calculator to play with the configuration you can safely handle and operate.
Reply:there will be no wood work done on this. maybe a bit of DIY at home  if it happened to be set up. I have a woodworking workshop for  that. I don't want to weld in there. too much moving stuff and worrying about sparks and fire
Reply:if it were me, I'd make something that I could lay flat on the ground and drive over, and then lift with the tractor for use. maybe just a couple tubes/I-beams that are longer than the work surface that will fit into the bucket and can be leveled with both legs, or the bucket. if you use 4 legs (I'd use slip in, not flip up) than you could put it back down and put the tractor back while you're using it, or you could just use it in the tractor bucket. Just make it narrow enough to fit between the tires of what ever would normally park over it. If it's a trailer, than you can still get your 4' width. if it's the tractor, you're probably stuck with less than 2'. I'm not a fan of flip up tables. you can't move them. they are limited in their size, and you can't work from both sides of them. Like stated above a 4x8' table out of 1/2" plate is 650 lbs. so not feasibly moved by one man, or two even. use the equipment available to your advantage. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
