Hello, I have a question about an old smith's AC-309 combination torch head. The copper tip spins inside brass ring, is this normal? Also where adjusting knob is missing a plastic grommet, or whatever it's called, the plastic is missing about half of it but where it seats into the hole is ok. Is that going to cause a problem? Lws said can't even order one.  The tip does leak, flames up around the tightening nut. Haven't had a chance to check that out yet. Thanks, Rob Attached Images
Reply:It sounds like you need a new tip.You need to send it to member OA Doctor and have him fix the valve/packing.Last edited by vwguy3; 05-19-2016 at 10:32 PM.

Reply:Pretty sure they still have all the parts needed to rebuild that torch.  A new tip is no big deal either, I'd get a couple as despite what some think, they're considered consumable.A lot of shops will say they don't make replacement parts anymore for whatever you bring in either out of laziness or greed.  Whether it's a cutting torch, a bicycle or old power tool.  I used to go to a diner where they had a waitress who would lie and say the milkshake machine was broken because she was too lazy to make one.  Don't trust anyone!Good luck!
Reply:Thanks everyone, I'll check out the O/A Doctor. I sure wish I could afford a new Smiths rig with regulators and all, it will come I just have to be patient. That's why I was really needing this torch to work out for me until then. I sold this set a few years ago and recently bought it back. After I cleaned it up it was popping obviously because of the tip, but also the flame was not mixing right because it was really bright, couldn't hardly look at it. After tightening the tip it seemed to work better. I'll keep working at it and post what I find out. Thanks again, Rob
Reply:What is CV that a 509? You can get it and the regulars rebuild for less money than buying a new rig. Just my 2 cents.  John Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Reply:I think the 309 is the small one, the 509 is the medium duty one."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:After I said 509 looked back and saw it was 309 still a nice touch.  John Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Reply:Some Smith torches have lifetime warranty ,you can call and see.
Reply:I have the MC-509 torch, forget the handle model.  Complete unused kit but the hose is missing.  Gave $100 for it. No doubt needs o-rings from sitting around so long.  It's the "Big 98" kit.  Probably from the late 1960's.Does Smith's warrant the cardboard boxes?  This one is pretty funky. Reply:The 509 is a nice size torch small but will cut some pretty thick stuff.  John Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Reply:Man, wish I knew that Smith torches are guaranteed for life, had given away a nice scrapping torch a few years back. Didn't need it then and don't need it now but who would have thought?Miller Multimatic 220ACMiller Thunderbolt 225Victor OA
