Remember the mechanical engineering student that I help build the collapsible bike frame?Keith came back this morning to start building the test frame for his collapsible bike frame. He has to prove the bike can take 180-pounds. We used some 1“ x 3“ square tubing to build the frame. Made a T section for the bathroom scale to press against. And a screw jack to add the force. Tomorrow we will finish welding the frame together, clean it up, and paint.Oh by the way, he got an "A" for the collapsible bike frame!  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Did Keith design the test apparatus? Or was it a group effort. I like the use of the bathroom scale. Simple and effective. It's all good to show it can take a static 180 lbs but a bike has to take that load dynamically... maybe a redesign is in order.

Reply:Interesting. I'd have just added wheels and a seat and sat on the darn thing to prove it. That would have easily passed the 180 lb test with a safety margin of 50% or so..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I wasn't very well liked in my college structures classes. Besides the fact I had access to a full shop of assorted real tools the kids didn't on campus, the fact I had a tendency to rewrite the class projects with a friend of mine and then over do them didn't sit very well with the other students or either the other class instructors. My instructor thought it was great that me and one other older student found the class interesting.Every time they had a project that had to be tested to "failure" we'd always bring in out own weights, usually several 12" solid concrete blocks, and when we ran out of those, we'd usually have 2 or 3 students stand on it as well. None ever failed... My 24" wide string and plaster "table" even withstood shock loads of 3 guys jumping up and down on top of about 500 lbs of block. Our wooden "bridge" held up all the students from all 4 Structures II classes at the same time..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I think it has been a cool project.  I do like your testing method with the stand and scale, had to look twice to see how the scale worked on top.I am curious though do you have any pictures of the frame collapsed?Eastwood 135 mig welderHobart Stickmate LX 235 AC / 160 DCHobart EX Tig 165

Reply:Finished the testing frame this morning. while I did the clean up, and put a coat of paint on the frame, Keith  wanted to get some hood time. I set him up with the Everlast PowerArc 300. He ran some 6010, and 7018, doing horizontal pad welds. Then some vertical up fillet welds. Then I set him up to do some over head. With about 1-hour of overhead welding under his belt, this is what he did with 5/32“ 7018! Reply:I think anything he can learn from me will be of some help to him as an engineer. I’m trying to talk him into sending this outfit his resume. I worked on numerous  projects they designed. They always had one of their engineers on site as an inspector. http://www.abam.com/Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Soo valuable to give prospective engineers some real-world fab and welding experience...  Give him some follow-up lessons about distortion and whatnot. My young one started out around middle school.  Learned to solder.  Then we did the FIRST Robotics thing for 5 years or so. He loved electricity stuff and learned to do a fine job on the wiring.  Then he trouble-shot mechanical stuff other people had done.  Went to community college for welding and machining.  Starts a new job Monday with some training on a Mazak CNC machine the company just acquired.  His concern is whether the sub-spindles can synchronize with the main spindle so he can machine hex ends on the fly or some such.  He's far beyond me at this point. G-code, Mazatrol, HAAS conversational, MasterCAM, all that. Apparently impressed some of the older machinists when he was doing the testing. Reply:Keith came back this morning to do some more practicing. Started him off on some vertical up with 7018. He had a hard time with it. Then he worked on his horizontal, and over head welding with 7018. Had him run a horizontal, and over head V-butt weld on 1/2“ thick plate. Then we did side bends on both. First picture is his best vertical up weld with 7018.
