I couldn't start a bead on Ac, the rod stuck to the steel. Switched to DC got some beads to start. All I have are some old stainless steel rods, Airco 19-9 the label is torn, haven't been able to find out anything about them. The hardest thing for me is starting the bead, I guess I'll get the hang of it with practice. Can't see anything either. It's OK just practicing, but how did welders start a bead before auto darkening helmets? Sure need to get one. What should I look for when buying auto darkening helmet, and what to avoid? Thanks for any help on starting a bead or weld, how to improve, good habits, what not to do.
Reply:use correct amps for rod diameter. use big enough rod diameter for material thickness. weld start do spiral or circle and circle weave as long as needed (to avoid cold weld starts).many rods do better holding a arc length. for example 1/8 dia rod use 1/16 to 1/8 arc length
Reply:Get yourself some 6013 rod to practice with..you will be amazed how much better the beads will be starting out...and grind to shinny metal....
Reply:Thanks Tom,I've been studying about amps, rods and rod size vs material thickness adjusting the machine accordingly. I've still got a lot to learn but loving it.
Reply:I'll go get some 6013 today, the rods I have are old, they may have drawn moisture, thanks
Reply:hm; you probably know this already but if you stick with the stainless rods wear safety glasses or flip up hood because the flux will pop off and fly a good distance as it cools.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
