I went to strike an arc yesterday after getting my engine rebuilt and nothing.  I have 110 power at high idle and I do have a faint sparkle when I try and strike an arc.  I am a little confused however.  I tried diagnosing the problem using the Weldmart troubleshooting CD guide.  I got 174 ohms off the right exciter terminal and one of the wires.  Then off the outside post of rheostat got 2-4 ohms to the other wire.  Not sure where to go from here, any help appreciated.  Not an electrian- just a dumb ol welder. Thanks.
Reply:Have you checked your brushes and your shunt coils?Lincoln 225 RangerSa200            01 dodge  3500 welding rig
Reply:Set the RPM's with a volt meter at the receptacle. Low idle 70 volts DC and high idle 125vdc. Adjust the low idle at the carb and the high idle at the governor.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Get your diagram and chase out the exciton circuits. You have 110 DC that's a start.Follow it to the rheostat and to the generator. Also check the weld circuit from the out put studs through the current control and to the weld brushes. I am guessing and connection is open and just needs to be spliced back together. Or you engine guy didn't connect a wire or put it in the wrong place. If you need diagrams, get your code number and call Lincoln they will e-mail or fax it to you for free. It is always best to have the right diagrams for your welder.
Reply:Just checked voltage at the weld terminals.  With the rheostat all the way up I got 3 volts and with it all the way down I got 2 volts.  Voltage at the aux. plug is still good at 110.  I m 99% sure all the wires are in the right place.  Every wire was numbered so they all should be good.  It's probably a bad stator coil knowing my luck.  It probably got screwed up when I was taking everything apart.
Reply:Checked the rheostat. Good there. Read 64 ohms.  Then I checked the shunt circuit.  Took the right brush out of the holder and took a reading from the left brush holder to the center post of the rheostat.  It also read 64 ohms.  According to the Weldmart CD it was suppose to read 46 ohms.  The CD said anything less than 165ohms means a winding to winding short.  Is 18 ohms a big enough difference to be concerned about ?  Thanks for the help.
Reply:Pulled the brown and blue wires.  They ohmed at 0.88 ohms and I think they should have 41.00 ohms.  So i am becoming more sure every minute it's probably the shunt coils.  Typical, get a fresh engine dropped in and have to take it all back apart again for something else.  My life in a nutshell.
Reply:My sa200 was doing the same thing last week, I was almost for sure it was those dang shunt coils but luckily I found that one of my brushes wasn't getting a good connection, fixed that and now she runs like a champ.Lincoln 225 RangerSa200            01 dodge  3500 welding rig
