I have a 22 year old Idealarc 250, that blew out 2 of the capacitors. I replaced them and after welding for about 15 min the same 2 capacitors blew . What can I look at for other causes?

Reply:When the diodes go bad, AC goes to the capacitors and they can't handle it. Reply:The welder is my dads, and he said he was welding and the it quit. My brother checked it over and found the 30000mf capacitors fried. It is a lincoln SP250 Code 90402 S/N AC-801776. I take it the diodes are on the main board??
Reply:An idealarc 250 is a stick welder. an idealarc SP 250 is a mig welder. which do you have.?If it is a SP250 and you only replaced part of the cap bank. not a good idea.Check the polarity you may have installed one or more wrong. Please post the code number so I know which welder you have and which version of it.The first 6 digits of the serial number will tell me how old it is.If you have a code 9402 sp 250 with round head screws holding the caps to the buss bars. Get your welder to a Lincoln service center for a free cap bank. If your cap bank has hex bolts it has already been replaced. If you have push on jumpers its the stick welder.PS put the original caps back in the welder before you take it in. because they have to be sent back to lincoln.Last edited by ccawgc; 08-26-2011 at 11:16 PM.
