so heres a drawing of a part, it consists of 1in square tubing that has had a wall machined out so its C shaped now, it is about 1/8th wall, the tubing is about 8in long, and has a piece of machined bar stock that has a step to sit inside that c channel, its about 7/8ths thick. you can see the dimensions. it has some holes drilled in it with counter bores, its aluminum, I need to stitch weld the two pieces together, I have a Miller Syncrowave 210 inverter, with pulse and balance control. do I need to preheat the solid piece in the oven and drop it into the channel to weld? im not sure my machine has enough nutz to get it done without preheat. what would you guys do? give me some specs, pulse, balance setting, tungsten size and type of grind.Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Simple. Yes, you have enough amps. May as well pop a 1/8th tungsten in your torch, perhaps blue or purple. Grind is up to your liking but I like a blunt pencil like grind and not let the ball get bigger than the diameter. Half to 3/4 of the tungsten diameter is nirvana to me. Gas Ar75/he25 is what I would use at full amps, and if not anodized I would use 4943 filler. Anodize use 5183 or 5356 filler 3/32 diameter. Cup size I would go #8 with a 20 to 22 cfh flow and gas lens.  Balance 75, freq 80 to 100htz. Zero pulse! And pedal to the metal and haul azz! You can do it!Anyway that is what I would setup for. I do not see a need for preheat. And again pulse is a waste of amps. You are on the edge as it is. Reply:Why are than not just welding the full length? Much faster.  I hate intermittent welds. Lot's of stress risers at beginning and ends of welds too.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I cant weld with he, don't have it, not going to get it for this one thing at this moment, I just bought a mill and some tooling and a vise for it this last week or so.... my budget has been more than busted lol, that's why I mentioned preheat. I think the reason for the stitch is heat input, he has had other people weld this part and they used mig and he said that it looked like they soaked it with heat, big globs of wire all over, mig welded, theres a nut that goes in the tubing part, and when there was a lot of heat and contraction, the nut wouldn't fit, and there went an 86 dollar partMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Weld detail is saying 1/8" leg, 1" long, 2 3/4" apart. On both sides. Not a lot of weld there.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Well yes then tack all of your parts and then preheat. Sometimes I use an electric hotplate and anything over 250 degrees helps a lot.Your customer my still have to chase the threads post weld.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:If the block is a close fit and you just heat the block it might not fit.If my calculation is correct heating the block to 250 degrees would make it expand about .002.

Reply:I have thought about the expansion and it not fitting, but it should be easy to pursuedMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:UDPATE: so what I did was put both pieces in the oven for 20min at 275, brought out into the garage and sat down, lit up and hammered down. I showed the guy, and he said that my welds were the best looking welds hes ever had on this job. hes been doing these parts for years, so I am glad to have a new customer, he says that from now on if he needs something welded its coming to me. I feel good about it, I may end up with a bottle of helium in the future because of this job, he said he may buy it just cause it could benefit the both of us.Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
