My dilemma, if it can be called one.   Some how i roped my self  the gig of at home dad and military spouse. after my time in service i got an A.S. in welding tech at Central New Mexico Community College at coming to do before we had our kid.  then the at home dad job started.  We have been in LA for 2 years now, and i have been doing mostly Stainless and aluminum welding for a friends Porsche shop. mostly doing headers and exhaust, and some intake/bracket work.    Now my dilemma is, with the kid starting Kindergarten this fall i can find a  8-5 job. BUT seems that most of the welding jobs here in LA are night shift work, which is not a huge deal, but i had to pass on a Space-X job due to my wife deploying (she currently is till november. why they sent a physicist to do paperwork in a desert is beyond me).  SO, i have been thinking of going back and getting more schooling with me GI bill.  but is a B.S. degree in metals tech worth much unless you are doing a management type job?  I for sure would need more hood time to get to that point...... you would think more schools in Los Angeles would have B.S> metal tech degrees but nope.....its nice having the option of more school vs work, but work would be nice...    Thoughts?  is a BS. worth it in the end ? especially for me staring out as a greenhorn?Dynasty 200 DX with Coolmate 3211 mvp
Reply:my late father who was an ironworker that used the gi bill to become a cpa. he went to college 6 years at night. he said the degree changed his life and gave our family some upward mobility. go for it.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:i'd vote to go to work, or both.   your not green if your welding stainless/alum for porshes.  i'd be more concerned about the kid.   imagineing what there going to teach a kid nowdays in ca schools, and la of all places.   i'd quiz  him every day after school, to make sure he still knows he's a boy, and girls are girls

Reply:If you have a chance to take some quaility assurance classes and AWS code classes, they will take you far. My job lately has been primarily Procedure developement and implentation. Everyone and their uncle does D1.1, but few concentrate on D17.1, D1.2, D1.3, and SD1.6.  Learn to read the codebooks and you won't be someone else's bitch.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I'm a 41 year old construction worker. I've been doing it for 20 years and have come to realize that I won't be able to do it forever. The mind gets better but the body gets old and tired. Welding can be hard on the body as well. A practical education can give you some career flexibility that could really benefit you and yours in ways that might not be clear right now.Smith Toughcut Hobart Stickmate AC/DC
Reply:this is The day and age where work experience no longer trumps education.  i have known many people to leave 20 years fo job history because their employer would not move them further up the ladder without a degree.  get the education, not finishing mine is my biggest regret at 30 years old.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
