I'm interested in buying a stick welder and I've looked at the hobart stickmate ac/dc unit and the miller thunderbolt xl 300 ac/200dc.  The cost difference is pretty big between the two.  Is there any advantage in getting the higher amp miller model?  I plan on building bumpers for my 4x4.  Thanks,
Reply:I'd say only differnce might be in how well the machine handles the 7018, but even still I dont think your going to get that much differnce.  I was never that impressed with 7018 on a cracker box.  But using 3/32 even on my little tombston worked.  Just not real wellCHRIS

Reply:Howdy!  If you are going to use a higher duty cycle, go with the Miller.  If you are patient, go with the Hobart.  The hobart would do just fine for what your thinking of doing.  I do believe the miller to be substantially better materials within the machine, but as to the work it can do?  Very similar I would think, for the end result.  But if you were to be doing heavier stuff, like cutting and twisting steering knuckles on a dana 60 axle, probably not.  If resale value is important for you when your done with your major projects, the hobart is definately lacking.  But you can always sell a lincoln or miller for good return on your money.   Good luck, Brian Lee  Sparkeee24
Reply:If you can afford it, always buy more machine than you think you'll need.  Nothing sucks more than not being able to do what you want, or having to buy another machine.  BTW Miller and Hobart are both part of Illinois Tool Works.
