Hi folks, another question for the experts.....Apon calling Miller, I was told  035 wire is not usable On this machine (not enough power), Yet the salesman I bought it from tells me different. Miller says .035 flux core only, salesman says they have had no problems using the larger solid wire. My welder is not quite a year old and has been used about 6 times due to my accident. My question is, using the spool of .035 they sold me going to shorten the life of my welder, or is it just not big enough to really use it properly. Oh and when I called the salesman, he for the first time read the manual and saw what I was talking about......yet it does have the specs for setup of (reg).035 on the inside cabinet door. I can live with .023/030 but the larger filler material would be a plus.  Any Ideas , pros/cons would be appreciated. Thanks in advance !
Reply:The salesperson was confused, probably because it will do .035 flux core.  I've personally never tried .035 hard wire with it, but I've burned plenty of .030 with it and have had hard enough time getting enough heat out of it.  I'd have serious doubts about .035, but I doubt that using it would hurt your welder.-Heath
Reply:This is the deal. You have an older MM 135 with the original style board. You can tell this by the door chart. If it lists .035 solid, it is the older one. It may still be new, but not the latest version. The newest ones do not list .035 solid, just .030 solid. The voltage settings are different as well. How do I know this? I have a 2000 MM 135. The board went south and was replaced under warranty. The new board was the latest style. With it came a new door chart. I had to relearn all the settings all over again. Now for the wire. You can burn the .035. That board was a lot hotter than the new ones, which some said led to its demise. You can do it....but, it will weld better with the smaller wires. I prefer .030 solid above all else in that machine. They just are not that powerful. With the smaller wires, you can get better current density and as a result, a more efficient use out of the machine. .023 would probably give you the best results, fwiw.As to flux core, all boards will run .035 flux core very well. It takes less juice to run .035 f/c than solid.
