After replaceing the elastic head band on my Jackson oxy/acet goggles twice so far this year and about to replace it again, I'm thinking maybe this band material is junk and I should try another type af elastic. Is it me only who has this problem or not? If you have a better fix than just replaceing with this stuff, lets hear about it. Thanks, Bob
Reply:Might try webbing with a buckle. I always wondered why they were so cheap myself, also some of those OAW goggles with the flip up lenses are pretty heavy. One thing that helps that elastic stuff stay good longer is keeping it away from heat and UV, both will kill it quick. When mine wear out they are getting replaced with leather. It always struck me as odd that you are urged not to wear any synthetic materials while OFW/cutting and yet the straps that you wear around your head are made out of it.
Reply:My daughter, who is a nurse, keeps me supplied well w/ the rubber bands they use on arms to draw blood. They outlast the elastics and the price is right because they have to dispose of them anyway. And no, she doesn't deal w/ AIDS patients. She works in a nursing home. Reply:Thanks guys, these are better fixes than just putting the same elastic back in! Bob
Reply:Rhunt, AWESOME post! I too had the same problem, and just gave up on cutting goggles. Ive tried heavier elastic, and it went bad. Reply:I weld only thin material using a #0 Victor tip, no cutting.I used the rectangular style oxy/acet goggles with a flip up #5 filter. For what I was doing, the goggles were too dark, too heavy, restricted my side view and if I wore them for any length of time, that elastic pulled the goggles into my face - leaving an outline of the goggle perimeter. The real challenge was the #5 filter always seemed too dark.It was such a pain, occasionally I welded without the goggles; then I was seeing spots. My solution: I bought a pair of dark, wrap-around, safety glasses with UV protection - perfect. No elastic, they are just like cool sunglasses (except for the thin black rubber perimeter).Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Stickman, you might try the silicone or neoprene mask straps that they use for dive masks. I never use goggles as they fog too much with my glasses, so I don't know if the mask straps will fit well or not. ( Not even sure I still have a set of shade 5 gogles anymore) For diving I use the neoprene ones with the velcro straps rather than the buckle types. I think they go under the name "Slap strap". They don't break and once you get them adjusted, theres enought "spring" in the neoprene to hold them snug and they don't loosen up with repeated removal. The only down side I see is that Neoprene and hot slag wouldn't make a good combination, say for cutting. Welding however would reduce this risk greatly under most circumstance. In this case the silicone ones might be better for cutting. Oh the neoprene straps also don't get tangled in long hair like the silicone ones do. A big plus with women..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manThat sounds like it would be a more comfortable solution than the tubing. But I know exactly what the op is talking about. I just use dark sunglasses now or the shade 5 goggle glasses I have. One drawback on the goggle glasses is the foam cushonaround your eyes, they really fog up. |
