Had it come down from on high the other day that Needle Scalers are now banned from use on all welds. It seems that it's thought that (a) it constitutes peening (and they think it's caused cracking of root passes) or (b) people have been using it to hide porosity (caulking). The only thing in the D1.1 that touches on "needle scalers" isObviously that's open to interpretation about just what constitutes a "light weight vibrating tool".It's my opinion that a needle scaler is a "light weight vibrating tool". And that all though it causes some light stippling of the weld surface it's not near any where enough plastic deformation that it could really be considered as "peening". As to using it to "cold shut" (caulk) and hide porosity well, I'm just not familiar with any pneumatic needle scaler that has that kind of power. I'm pretty sure that in the past I've seen some technical discussion (or code commentary) of this issue but can't seem to locate it right now. Every time I use the words "needle scaler" in a search phrase all I get are adds for them.If any ones knows where there's any technical discussion of this issue please post a link to it. Opinions welcome also.
Reply:There are pneumatic peening tools as well as needle scalers. This one is a single blunt peening attachment but I've also seen ones that had three in a line.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
