Hey all! Anyone ever had to fix a slipping spindle lock on a 5" Makita grinder? I have the model 5000B. Great grinder. I've had it for years. Probably has a 100,000 miles on it.  I opened up the gear housing by removing four philips screws, and as I suspected, the little spring loaded pin that locks the main gear when you depress the pin is rounded and slipping. (Don't depress the pin until the disc stops spinning!!) I am wondering how to remove the spindle lock pin from the gear housing. I thought maybe I could remove it and flip it over and re-install it. Anyone ever done this before? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Reply:What happens on those,(at last count I had 7) is the sleeve that houses the lock pin backs out. If you look at the pin, the round sleeve around it needs to be tapped back in and then take a center punch and displace some alum around it to capture the sleeve. This is all moot if you've gauled a disk on there and have sheared the pin. If thats clear as my wifes coffee, which will hold a vertical spoon, I can take some picks.
Reply:Thanks for the replies guys. Wolf, if you have seven of these grinders, then you have lots of experience with them!  Not sure I quite follow your explanation though. I will have to take things apart again this weekend and have another look at the grinder. Pictures would be really great if you could include a couple. Thanks, -Dan
Reply:OK, I suck at uploading pics, maybe I can taik you through this. With the grinder on the table, disk down, look at the spindle lock. The little ring that surrounds the lock pin, if you tap that back down, and use a center punch to stake it in about 3 or 4 places, the pin won't back out again, and end up not catching the corresponding holes. If that is still confusing, I'll get my son or grandson to help me.......I spend enough time on the computer you'd think I'd know. more to the point that I'd remember how to put up pics correctly
Reply:Hey Wolf! Just tried your fix it remedy. It works slick! Thank you so much!  I am good for another 100,000 miles on the grinder! I love weldingweb!-Dan
Reply:Glad to help, great grinders. Once you start hearing the chatter in the head, put some grease in and get some replacement bearings on hand. Don't buy cheap bearings.I have a couple of these that are 15 years old and have been flat abused, but maintained. I remember buying the first ones new on sale for 80.00 ea. My have things changed. Good Luck
