I have an OLD Hobart tig cooler, I suspect its a rebadged Bernard unit as it looks pretty much identical to the modern 6 gal Bernard stainless tig cooler offered today. Its a big'un, claims to be rated for 1000A duty and 100% duty cycle.  And its ancient and LOUD as can be.Some of the loudness is the fan, and it certainly doesn't help that I've got some short leads on my tig rig and its annoying when I'm close enough for the cooler to be blowing my shielding gas away, but I've for the most part been smart enough to position the rig at an angle to what I'm working on so as to avoid having that happen, at least after the first couple times I did it Since I've built a passive cooler in the past for a similarly-sized welder (300A) I think I could get by with no fan at all, but I'm strongly considering putting a temperature sensitive switch in line with the coolant return line and using it to turn on a few brushless 120V fans, that way I could ditch the normal fan completely and eliminate some of the noise and wind for the most part.  Mind you 95% of the time I use this thing it runs for less than 10 mins.  Has anybody done something like this, or are there any factory units set up like this? Most of the noise however is from the pump, and I'm wondering if anybody has ever rebuilt the bernard cooler pump and if so did it help or is it just factory-noisy?  I used a carbonator pump in the old tig cooler I made when I still had my old Linde, and it wasn't a tenth as loud as this one is.  If a rebuild would help I'd be all about it if not I'm seriously thinking about bypassing that pump and using a carbonator pump to cycle coolant thru this machine.

Reply:I have the same one. Trust me, it's not the fan. It's the oberforfer straight gear pump. I rebuilt my Oberdorfer pump, new gears etc. and it is still loud. A little quieter but still loud. When I had the unit apart I just turned the fan on an had the pump disconnected. The fan is not loud at all.T.J.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt.
