Not welding per se, but I think it will have a lot of interest here.http://www.wimp.com/footpowered/Amazing... just amazing what this guy does with wood. Amazing to see all the old construction techniques that have been largely forgotten.
Reply:Awesome video. My little brother is a bowl turner and has been bugging me to build a small treadle lathe for him to take to the fairs he attends. I was thinking a large cast iron flywheel would be great and this confirms it. I was looking at these plans:http://www.manytracks.com/lathe/lathe.pdf
Reply:I can remember watching Roy Underhil's "The Woodwrights Shop" on PBS as a kid back in the 80's. I remember him building a spring pole wood lathe for basic materials and even tried to build one myself back then. Shame his show isn't on in my area. I've always loved to watch him do things with just simple hand tools like they used to back in the day.Shows that you really don't need the newest fancy gizmo to create some really beautiful stuff if you have patience and skill..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Now THATS talent!I have always said I can do just about anything with metal, but hand me a chunk of wood and I become an idiot. DSW, I remember the The Woodwrights Shop also. you can still catch it once in awhile on PBS here. Usually on Saturday mornings. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish

Reply:That's incredible.  I hope that took him a really long time to build.  Either that, or he's in incredible shape!

Every so often, I have reason to use a hand saw or an axe, and I thank my lucky stars I live in an era where we have power tools and chainsaws. To think how tired my wrist would be after sawing out the groove for the metal bed of the lathe! Sheesh!
