I bought this vice today, it's a Chas Parker if that means anything to anyone it doesn't to me. Anyway It's about 50lbs, it smoothly opens and closes, the base tightens nicely, the jaws have a little bit of rust but are in good shape, and there isn't any pitting or cracks. As I've said before I don't know a lot about vices, but I only paid $35 for it. Tell me, did I luck out and manage to get a good deal?

Reply:I'm glad I got a good deal, I have another question though. Does anyone know what it's made of? I don't believe it's cast iron, maybe malleable cast?I'm only asking in case it splits in half after I use it.
Reply:You did very well on that vise, you will have it forever. If you break it, just send it to me, I will pay the postage.......Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:You guys are a tough crowd. I paid considerably more for a used Wilton Mechanic's vise back in 08. I thought I had a good find. Nothing compared to what you guys are picking up though. Nice score.
Reply:I didn't haggle when I found mine for $100.

Reply:Ooo thats a steal... Nice find
Reply:steal is an understatment, go look on ebay most want an arm and a leg for one in worse shape. Idk where you guys find these sweet deals, I have been wanting a good vintage vise for some time.
Reply:The place I got my car hoist from had a whole bench full of vises ready for the auction the next day. My friends and I cleaned them out before the auction, guy said I don't know what they are worth, I'll take $25 each for them!

Reply:I jealous, you have to really be lucky to score a good deal on something like here in Fl with all the pro blue hair crabbers patroling around here. I paid $200 last year for a 1930ish Columbian in mint conditon and was pretty happy to get it.
Reply:Here are some that were given to me. American Scale Co all dirty and greasy. Just cleaned it up and painted it (red one). Two Rock Island vises. Silver one was free, paid $20 for the rusty one at a flea market. Also have a nice big Columbian, a smaller Columbian and another big one (can't remember the name) that were all given to me. BIG Parker (previously shown) $50 from Craigslist.I have 6 big vises (4" wide jaws and larger) and 2 smaller vises for a total investment of $70. I seems that when you have a home machine shop, people can't wait to give you their stuff they don't need or use anymore. "Hey, I have this big old vise that's been in my shed for years. You want it", "Sure, I'll take it". I ran out of benches to put them on. I get milling vises too. That 300# Fisher anvil was given to me also. Reply:Anyone have any tips on freshening up misshapen vice jaw insert faces? What material (carbon content) are these typically made of, and are they usually (or ever) hardened steel?I've got some mis-shapen ones (that clamp in the middle rather than the edges) on a vice I'm restoring, and was wondering what approach to repairing them would be appropriate. |
