So a farmer friend dropped off a pintle hitch and drawbar and wanted me to make an adapter for his JD tractor. So I designed something that I think would work based on his rough dimensions. He has a larger Case tractor that he normally pulls the hay trailer with but wanted to be able to use the smaller JD in a pinch around the farm.I started by cutting out the parts on the plasma table. I then bent the sides to allow clearance for the bolts. I didn't model the bends because I was trying to keep this simple. I used 2.5" flat bar for the top and bottom sections. Drilled the holes and the bored them true to match the draw bar diameter.
Reply:I originally plasma cut the mounting plate but wasn't happy with the slots. I find that cutting small holes in thick plate often to be less than satisfactory... so I cut a new plate and drilled them dead on. Much better.I then started tacking it together. Now you can see how it all comes together.
Reply:When I left Saturday it was tacked but I was too tired to finish... so this morning I cut out a few tacks and straighten it out. I was very careful to not let the shrink grab the bar too tight. It went better than I expected. After welding the base tube I then use clamp and some heat to straighten it back up. Also, when I welded the mounting plate... it puckered a little so I heated it nearly straight and then mounted the pintle hitch to draw it the rest of the way while it was still hot.
Reply:At some point today he stopped by to see how it was coming along and we went over and checked it on JD tractor I've been working on. He wanted me to add a mount so he could put a 3-point adjustable link to help take some of the load off the drawbar. So I hot bent about 7" of flat bar and then drilled and bored it to size. I then welded it to the top of the adapter. For some reason I didn't snap a picture after it was welded. I guess you'll have to wait until tomorrow.I've popped the popping corn... let the games begin. Enjoy.
Reply:Looks like it should hold well. The 3rd arm brace is considered dangerous tho, if the pin breaks or falls out of the other part and it pulls off the drawbar the tractor can flip from pulling too high. Pulling from the third arm hook is a common cause of tractor roll overs. Lots of them done this way, just thought I'd pass that along for consideration.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw

Reply:I pull a pintle traile with my deere too. I went at it a little different. Your solution looks stout though. I modified a trailer mover (has a gooseneck ball at the top and 2" receiver on the bottom) from a cat 1 to cat 2 so it'll fit in my quick hitch. The slid the pintle hitch and receiver in the hitch. That way I can use it for the truck and tractor. Cheap and light. Brett

Reply:Aw ain't that pretty !    Great job too ! You know if the REAL JOHN DEERE paint was used you gotta add another $25.00 MINIMUM ! As for the center link, I don't see how it would be affected. IF the pin falls out of the draw bar the center link should actually hold it at the set location. Most are adjustable and if he's concerned, just make one that is fixed rigid .

Reply:Looks great!I agree: I don't think bracing using the top link will increase rollover potential- the load is still pulled from a low point.DB

Reply:I think the extra bracing is a good idea. I've actually broken 2 John Deere drawbars (they tell me it's a rare occurrence) , one on a 4020, one on a 5020. Our 1500 gallon honey wagon was hard on them. More often I have snapped the bolts that hold the swing assembly up bouncing across fields with 6 tonne fertilizer spreaders, but at least it didn't end up looking like a busted 9N.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:Just to be clear, I know the third arm brace is used quite a lot, after all of couldn't be a leading cause of roll over accidents if it wasn't. I've used it myself when I helped a friend move a trailer house. If the customer is a good opperator, the kind that will make sure the bolt or pin attatching this to the drawbar are secure and in good repair he should be fine. But if he's a weekend warrior who is a frequent customer due to dumb mistakes you could be looking for trouble.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw

Reply:Looks nice, but wouldn't a standard hammer strap of done the same thing? We had to add braces under our big tractors drawbar that bolt up to the same holes the top link does but the 850 bushel grain cart still pins and pulls on the drawbar, braces just keep the drawbar from bending down under the high tongue weight. Cart hooks to drawbar with a hammer strap and standard pin.

Reply:Wow. I never expected such a good discussion on the support link. Brink, I originally asked about the 3-point tow bar but he said it tends to move around too much and prefers the drawbar. As for the hammer strap, that would work provided the mount could take it. The drawbar on the Case is twice the size. He's broken or bent a few drawbars in his lifetime so I assume he knows what he wants and why.

Yours must have had the tandem axles to get some of the weight off the hitch. Reply:Tandem floaters, but still a lot of weight at the hitch. I sometimes still use that tank, but with an old JD 8630.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A

Reply:I occasionally move my tri-axle around the yard on chain on the 3 point. Making something like this would be better, even though it would get rarely used.
Reply:As always nice work! What kind of plasma table do you have? I just bought a torch mate.

Reply:The table is 10 / 5. The plasma is a thermal dynamics A60. I don't have it hooked up yet although it's close. I did a major spring cleaning, moved my milling machine and alimanated a palet rack. It's amazing the stuff you think you need!
