Lincoln 200amp Welder

Can any of you give me some insight into this welder. I asked the guy if it ran and welded and he said yes, and he wanted $250 for it. I offered him $200 and he accepted, i'm going to pick it up on Thursday.
Reply:Did a little digging, it seems to resemble something in the 1948 range of Lincoln 200 amp welders.
Reply:Hello Eric N, if it runs even half-decently and has decent weld output I'd say that you did just fine. Does it include the trailer and toolbox? If so, you did even better. Looks to be powered by a Wisconsin V-4 engine, possibly a hand-crank to start? Once again, if it's electric start all the better and if everything works you can't go wrong. I used to run a similar type machine a lot of years ago, only it was belt driven and a GE 200 amper. Even though they are probably not considered in the same league as an SA 200 they are still a very good machine. Best regards, Allanaevald

Reply:Hello CEP, been in the game a day or two and I have run SA's, SAE's, SAM's, various other Lincoln engine and motor/generators. Along with a ton of other machines of various makes and models, engine and land-based. Part of my job is to know some of the differences of their arc characteristics and capabilities. The generator on that machine, if it's a Lincoln, which the OP has said that it is, will certainly exhibit one form or another of the Lincoln trademark arcs. Now, if you are asking me which machine it specifically emulates, no I can't say for sure without welding with it myself. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I was just wondering if it might weld like a Shorthood, or a Red Face. Just going by looks I'd say it's close to a Shorthood, but that is only a guess / gut feeling. I feel my Shorthoods stack 6010 better than my Red Face machines, then again I feel my Red Face machines run 7018 better than the Shorthoods. Again, I was just wondering if you had some insight to these old machines. Reply:Hello again CEP, I reacted a bit hastily to your initial post, shouldn't have done that. The main jist of my post to the OP was to say that regardless of what he planned on doing with that welder, that he had done well to purchase it for the price that it was being offered. As to the arcs of the various machines which you had included in your reply. I believe the benefit to much of the availability/abilities of these machines(Lincolns) that I noticed that you have in your arsenal, is to the versatility of their capabilities. I am fairly certain that you are likely aligned with a pipe related industry, possibly cross-country pipelining. I have not personally rolled racks, adjusted, or altered/switched parts on these machines to taylor their arcs. If you have any knowledge of Fowler machines, I further understand that they are well-known for offering additional alternatives to tayloring welding arcs produced on these machines. In my view a culture all on it's own and definitely a niche market which is very important and personal to those who use them. My own personal choice in a Lincoln SMAW capable welding machine is actually the entire line of motor/generators commonly referred to as "torpedoes", they were electrically motor driven generators and also had an inductance dial to go along with the amperage selector/adjustor. Here again I am taking into account the specific work that I was doing at that time and the basis of my answer takes that into account.   Best regards, Allanaevald
