i want to know how to wire a pig tail for a remote for my 69 red faceRod Burner
Reply:Years ago wiring a remote on those old machines was easy because we approached it in an easy to understand way. And it worked. The wires that goes to the local rheostat we unhooked them and put them on a double-throw + double-pole toggle switch. Then we ran some short jumpers up to that local rheostat, and on the other side of the toggle we connected a short piece of extension cord with a female plug on it. We labeled the toggle LOCAL and REMOTE. And thats the way it was for several years.Somewhat later on someone figured out we were only using 2 of the wires in our 3 wire cords and that we still had to run a grinder cord out to the weld (which was a bummer of course), and he also figured out that one of the wires on the remote was only a typical ground wire - - - so then, somewhere in the mid 80's I think, we added the grinder 110v lead onto our cord's brass prong (black wire), the ground (white wire) from the 110v receptacle on the machine to the wide prong (polarized) , and put the rheostat's hot wire on the green chassis ground round prong on the pigtail's plug-in. Then we only needed a single pole x double throw toggle, and the grinder would work with plugging in our remote control box (just plug the grinder into the extension cord). This was a huge improvement I must say. The toggle now only switched the hot lead from local to remote and it got its needed typical ground connection from the receptacle's ground wire on the machine's receptacle. Back then - that was some HIGH - TECH **** man. You can do the REAL OLD WAY if you want too. Cut the male end off of a 100' 3wire 12g extension cord. Peel back enough wire so the black wire goes on the machines receptacle's hot prong (the brass one). The white wire to the receptacle's ground prong (the wide one), and the green wire to the center prong on the machine's rheostat. You can use the cord as a normal extension cord until you plug in a remote box to it. In the remote box you need a 110v outlet and a rheostat wired the same way as above but run a jumper wire from the white wire on the 110v receptable over to the other prong on the rheostat (gives it ground), then put a piece of broken clear glass under the whipper of the machine's rheostat to take it out of the system or you will have the total of both rheostats at the same time. Not a good thing unless you expect all of that. good luck man
