Hi,I'm not experienced enough so this may be a dumb question.I need to buy some steel tube for welding. The steel suppliers only have primed or galvanized. Is it easier to grind (only have grinder, don't want to buy paint stripping liquids) off primer or galvanizing before welding? I think primer might be thinner so it is easier to grind off.I am going to use general purpose STICK electrodes by the way.
Reply:Sounds really odd that that is all they have. Sounds more like the tubing used for building construction. Is it "galvanized" as in hot dipped or galvanized as in the magic wand sprinkle coat called electroplate?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Primer is easier to remove. Galvanized tends to smear and not really grind off all the way - for me anyway.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:How big a piece are you trying to strip? I used to make biodiesel, and it's a big no-no to use galvanized in the piping for the processor. Solution is to use muriatic acid (weakend with water) and soak the piece overnite, which removed all the galvanize. Reply:Primed steel would be better in the long run for a new welder because if it's not all removed you will not get sick from the gases released.Klutch 220si mig , stick, and dc tigHobart 140 AHP ALPHA 200X 2016Lotos LTP5000DSmith O/P
Reply:Primed would be the easiest for sure. Post your location and maybe a member knows of a supplier near you.
Reply:If its easier to strip then no problem. I just need to grind off the ends a bit so I can weld it onto another piece. After that I just paint over the whole job with some paint to be used indoors. I live in Sydney Australia I look at all the big local suppliers they seem to sell Angles bare but tubes primed, who knows why. |
