hello all - Ive made custom ice climbing axes last year for my 10yo daughter. they worked great. They are straight shaft tools, but shes quickly progressed from slabby WI2 to full on WI4(toprope anyway)  - so she needs a curve shaft now. I used 1/2 od round tube for the axe shaft. I cant seem to get a clear picture of what I need to put a moderate but smooth and consistent bend in these shafts. Planetary ring roller? the Harbor freight tube roller - with 1/2" dies?(where would I get those dies?) Advice is appreciated. Thanks

Reply:What type tube?  Some custom wood dies would work.  Conduit benders might work. Hf pipe bender with custom wood dies would work. In the bike frame building arena wood dies are often used for bending chromoly.
Reply:Custom wood dies would work.  Leverage could be direct if part is long enough or made mechanical. Some bicycle frame builders use wood dies for bending chromoly tubing.Delrin is easy to work with too.
Reply:A pipe bender such as the first pic would work or if you have access to a shop press, use or make a set up dies like the second pic.You need a longer section of pipe if you are going to roll it. A press would be better for a short sectionMillermatic 252 MIGMiller Dynasty 200DX TIGMiller Spectrum 625 PlasmaAltas 12x36 Metal LatheBridgeport Milling Machinewww.psacustomcreations.com
Reply:A ring roller will work, there are many examples on YT, if you have access to a lathe then it'd be easy to make your own dieThey can be very simple in design.RichardWest coast of Florida

Reply:I appreciate all the replies so far. Given me something to think about. Broccoli yes that is the gist of what I want to do. Climbing vertical or overhanging ice its really nice to have that curve so you dont smash your knuckles everytime you swing. wouldnt it be good to run a 20' stick of the 1/2" round steel tube I used through a roller and then cut sections to use. They would be nearly identical.

Reply:Rolling a longer length then cutting out sections would be best. You will always have uneven curves at the start and end of the material. With a long piece you minimize that waste.

Reply:To be honest, I wouldn't make them at all.  While I understand that folks made them at home back in the day when there were no companies churning them out.... things are different now.  It's like saying you'll make her some rope to use. This is life-saving equipment.  This is something that could literally save her from a falling and getting hurt or killed.  Do you want to have a weld fail in the freezing cold, the head snapping off at exactly the wrong moment? The very best ice axes on the REI website cost under $300.  I know that might still seem like a lot of money, but.... you'll have well over that invested by the time you finish fabricating your own, especially if you have to buy some tools.  And to what gain?  Your daughter's learned and excelled at her hobby so give her the gift of a sweet new Black Diamond Reactor or Casin X-Llight.
Reply:...and there's always that one guy.
Reply:I usually make everything like many here. Sometimes you need a product that's made for a specific specialty. That's where it's hard to compete with a company that invested $$$ and hours testing theirs Buy the best as VaughnT stated.  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:I gave you advice on how to bend the tubing. I have been to the winter mountain warfare school in Vermont and been ice climbing. See attached photo. Vaughn has brought up very valid points. You may not like the message, but they are things to consider when dealing with life support items. You used railroad spikes, tubing and what look like dry wall screws. How sure are you of your welds? Have you actually tested them? If so, how? With your attitude,  you will either fit right in with certain members or see yourself out when you don't get an answer you like.Sent from my SM-G996U using TapatalkLast edited by psacustomcreations; 3 Weeks Ago at 10:19 AM.Millermatic 252 MIGMiller Dynasty 200DX TIGMiller Spectrum 625 PlasmaAltas 12x36 Metal LatheBridgeport Milling Machinewww.psacustomcreations.com

Reply:first of all youre talking about welds "breaking". I dont know whatr kind of amatuer world you live in, my welds dont break, and have passed every UT and xray test over hundreds of jobs. if you know what TOPROPE means, youll know that the entire ice face could calve off, both axes could "snap" AND her crampons pop off - and shes perfectly safe. tens years of mountain rescue - 2 as safety director, 10 years as a structural ironworker GF, 12 years as an army engineer with accident investigation. Oh yeah a BS in occupational safety. just cause you brought it up, MODS your "I forgot my password" features to regain access to my very old account is broken.  So I made a new one.
Reply:oh thats cute. You went to a 2 week school. I was actually out saving lives in the Colorado mountains, year round for 10 years.  2001? you probably still ****in used goldline. But hey, mountain strong, you ever wonder how your "proud mountaineering tradition" started? Do you know where the stoveleg pitch is? do you know why its called that? Do you know why they call them nuts? you think pitons came from a factory back during all those first ascents? 2001 though. Wow. Id already been climbing for a decade and could have run circles around you. bunch of my soldiers have come back from mountain school in the past 4 years. full of "knowledge" and completely unaware of how much they (and you) dont ****in know. how many lead pitches have you done, ice or trad? How many anchors have you built? How many mountain rescue (MRA.org) personnel have you trained to operate on a regional level? How many high angle rescues have you done?I can answer  from several (for high angle rescues) to dozens and hundreds. You can answer "**** all".  Cool certificate bro. To real climbers and mountaineers that literally screams amatuer hour.Last edited by midnight76; 3 Weeks Ago at 03:23 PM.

I know what many would tell you but it's not nice.   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
