1) My grandson has a CNC router table and wondered if he could hook a plasma torch to it with no modifications other than fastening (removing the router of course). I couldn't answer him so I thought I'd ask here.2) Also, if he can't or doesn't want to go that way, who makes a medium priced 2 x 4 CNC plasma table that works well?I assume the plasma torch is a separate purchase from the table in #2, you pick the one that suits your stock thickness, compressor, billfold.
Reply:Depending on the table it can be done, I have built a few table and most were dual purpose (some with more options). There needs to enough vertical distance so you can mount a cutting grate. Most likely there will be enough as routers have a taller travel in the Z direction. The attached images show a flat plate on the Z axis that I attached either a router or a plasma torch. I used a boom for the Plasma cable and the router power and vacuum hose for dust collection. I would suggest putting a water table for plasma cutting as there is a lot of very fine metal dust produced when cutting. Mine is about 4" deep with a 2" support frame and 1-1/2"X 1/8" slats that the metal rests on. It will require a small amount of extra wiring for additional circuits for signals. Reply:Yes you can put a plasma torch on a CNC router. Several DIY CNC machines do this. It's very common.
Reply:Thank you acourtjester, that's exactly the kind of detail and information that helps us make our decision. He's currently getting his knife blades water jetted, he decided he's a little picky on edge quality so doesn't think plasma edges will work. He's talking about something called fiber laser for in the future. I don't know what that is. |
