Hi all.  I just recently baught a Lincoln Weld Pak 3200hd.  I plan on using it to build a go-kart of possibly some bumpers for my bros jeep.  My question is, can someone help me out with what kind of metal i should be using, such as how strong certain walls are.  for the go-kart i was thinking of using 1.0"OD x .125" wall 304 steel.  It seems the site i looked at only had stainles vs just normal steel.the other option i have would be to use aluminum but ive read that alum. is harder to weld so i wanted to stay away from if it will add to my difficulties.basically i plan on dropping like a 340cc snowmobile engine in the kart (since im in MN and snowmobiles are in abundance here).  i want it to be able to support atleast 250lbs plus the weight of the engine and seat and so forth.if anyone could offer any input i would appreciate it.  Like i said i am brand new to this and learning welding solo so any tips on welding in general would also be appreciated, thanks.
Reply:Square and rectangular tubing would be easier to weld than round stock, and steel a lot cheaper than stainless.
Reply:hmm i guess it doesnt matter to me one way or the other.  will square stock be able to support what i need though?
Reply:I Build a lot of products out of 1.25x1.25x0.125 (mild steel) SQ tubing. It’s pretty strong, but it’s all in how you build and gusset it. Try some 2x1x0.100 RQTB On edge for the main rails.Mild steel tubing is very easy to weld, but heavy. There’s pros&cons ether way. But brother, please, get the help of a real welder, when welding it all together, this sounds like a pretty dangerous situatio n. And your life is on the line.  Thanks, Eh!
Reply:haha, danger is my first, last, and middle name!  im all for it breaking when im driving down the road at like 40mph assuming i can ever get it that far hahaha.
Reply:what is regular steel classified as?  everywhere i go they only have stainless then something called hot roll and cold roll?  i might just order my metal online because i had a hell of a time finding metal last time i was doing a hobby project.  so if that is the case i need to know exactly what it is i should be looking for.i wish it were just like, i want steel at this dimention, make is so number one lol.
Reply:Hot Roll = Mild steelCold Roll = Hard steelThats the basics.  Thanks, Eh!
Reply:Hot rolled steel = usually mild steelcold rolled steel = usually mild steel, but usually a little bit harder and a little bit more precise dimensionally and with a little bit less mill scale than hot rolled steelEither is usually weldable without too much difficulty.Steels called "free-machining steel" are usually not weldable, because the addition of small amounts of sulfur to make it free-machining then pretty much makes it unweldable.Other types of steel may or may not be weldable, or easily weldable, without extra steps or procedures that may or may not be within the realm of "do-able" by a hobbyist. If the job needs certain specific mechanical properties, then a specific steel alloy will be specified for the material(s).Some stainless steels are weldable, some are weldable with difficulty, and some are really not weldable. The material, design, and fabrication all have to work together to make a "good" job/product.Before doing a project that involves life or limb, practice, practice, and practice some more.  Get experience, practice more.
Reply:thanks for the info.
