my instructor keeps telling me that tig is where all the money is..but i can never get it out of him how much money i could earn from doing things from stick to tig.and what i would like to know is..if i would open my own buisness after 5 or so years of welding(saving money up the whole time for that buisness) is there any way shape or from that i could possibly turn that small buisness into a million dollar buisness over time? and i do plan on getting my liscence to be a welding inspector. i just started my 7018 and i've gotten pretty good at it,i still have some ways to go but when i do get finished with this class(two year) i'll be a certified welder and i'll pretty much have a job waiting for me. sorry if this is in the wrong section but it is late and i tried to figure out the best section to post this in.i surf the lamborghini websites and just some of the ways thoes guys make millions of dollars by the timethey are 25 are just mindblowing..for instance this guy made a damn duck call and sold it to walmart and well lets just say he doesnt have to work a nother day in his life and he owns no less then a million dollars with of cars, his house(im told) is breathtaking  and well im tired of living paycheck to paycheck.. and i know welding is a great industry but i just need an insite on just how good of an industry it really is..
Reply:a million dollars just welding i dont think so you can make good money but it will depend on how good you are and what your willing to weld last time i looked off shore and underwater welders make the most$  i turned down two $50,000.00a year to start jobs to some thats good money to others not so much, good luckChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:welding is only as much fun as you make it...i try to have fun doing it everyday...its all in your attitude......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I think it mostly depends on where you live as to what you make.  In this little town I live in we start welders out at $12/hr.  and that's decent around here.  I've been there 3 years welding and I only make about 45,000/yr. and I'm supervison now.  Good benefits though.  I'm sure if I was willing to travel (which I ain't) I could make more.  Plus when you're working always be busy and go above and beyond your employers expectations.  I always worked until quitting time while the other guys would be standing around talking at a quarter till time to go (the guys that were there before me)Now I'm their boss. Reply:welding for us freelance specialists is feast or famine. i'm sure over years we will have made a million. i think the last soc. security letter i got, i hade made a little over 250,000. but thats with an a## of overtime. but who cares about being rich, i enjoy going to work everyday. when i'm welding at the house, i drink beer and burn rods. it doesn't get any better than that. but like zap says, have fun. when i go to the 6-6 job, i just have a good time."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:i shure dont weld to get rich i weld couse i like it its fun for meChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:thanks for ur imput guys, yes welding is fun,i love it already, there are times that i cant wait to go home at the end of the day tho,but other then that i dont have one complaint about welding..i didn't think i'd get rich off of welding, but it would be nice to go to work in a $350,000 lamborghini lol.
Reply:when i started in business (not welding) a wise man told me, "you can have the nicest office and the thickest carpet on the floor and the best production people and the prettiest secretaries and til someone sells something, they can all stay home."  Welding can be fulfilling and satisfying but, if you want to make money, develop a product or service that people will pay for then sell it.  If it's something you can weld, so much the better.
Reply:Hey Buddy, if you want enormous $ for your time, and are still young enough, consider taking a course in underwater welding. I had a classmate in my basic welding course(1982) who went that way, worked for 5 years & now buys/sells/develops real estate, though he could afford to sit on his butt & do nothing. LMAO, Meanwhile I'm 43, going on 90, & wonder if I'll be able to call it quits in 10 years, before the legs/back/lungs/eyes "give out" completely. Oh sure, I love what I do, but not so much in the wee hours when I wake up to major muscle cramps. At times like that, the only consolation is my cheque stub & a couple of Tylenol 3's. (whine, whine, whine.) Still, you have to love this game to play it for this long. TIG? Most TIG welders aren't paid anywhere near what they should be. Then again, who is? While I'm rambling, a buddy of mine just left for Northern B.C., to a job(pressure pipe) which pays C$60/hr., almost twice what I make. As he can buy a house for about 25% of the cost here, in Vancouver, freezing his nads off is probably worth it.Good Luck!Mike
Reply:As far as tig being the Holy Grail, well, it is the most advanced form of manual welding, but remember this: Tig is SLOW. Time is money. And guys who can weld tig??? In 3-5 yrs, thanks to all the chopper build/ truck build shows, tig guys who are good will be like flies. In O.C. Calif. they already are all over the place. They open shops, advertise, and go down in 3-9 months like dominoes. If you REALLY like to weld, then learn to do it all, from O/A to tig. You will have a real job in the real world. Because a real honest to goodness welder is always going to be needed.
Reply:Money is in WORK ATTITUDE more than anything.  A guy that insists on learning TIG because it's more prestigious is probably going to be wondering why the Stick weldor that's in the field all week is making twice the money.
Reply:i would look into underwater welding but,me and water dont mix to well,i can handle water that is up to my chest and anything else deeper then that,im freakin.i plan on learning all the tools of the trade, not only tig,and i dont only want to know how to do one thing i/e welding so i have been tossing around the idea about getting into real estate (as from my understanding is that in the right place,a person can make some good money) and another thing that intrests me is heavy machinery,i was talking to a few guys a while ago and they said that if they was willing to travel that they could make a good piece of dough too..but no where near as much as i would like to make.. like mac702 was saying about work attitude, that is something i truly beleave in,you dont work hard at anything you wont have nuffin so in everything i do i always give 110% all the time..i hate starting stuff and not finishing it..im going to look into this magazine called millionare blueprints,a lot of people that has gotten welthy has gotten most thier ideas from the people in that mag so i might pick it up and see what it really has to offer..
Reply:My wife and I are both qualified divers, so I looked at getting into underwater welding too, but I realized it wouldn't work for me either.  I'm a very picky diver because I have literally 0% body fat.  I lose body heat very quickly in water, and most jobs would likely be in some sort of cold water somewhere.  I don't feel like investing in drysuits at this point in time.I've never given anything 110%, but that's just me.
Reply:Welders Wanted: It is a common refrain in many industries: Baby boomers will retire soon, leaving an industry in the lurch. Add welding to the list of occupations that could be harmed. The Wall Street Journal, citing the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, reports that the number of welders has declined 10 percent during the past six years. Also cited is the American Welding Society, which predicts that demand for welders could outstrip supply by about 200,000 workers as soon as 2010. Companies, in particular smaller manufacturers, are paying higher-than-average wages to retain experienced welders being wooed by larger firms. I keep talking about the coming opportunities for blue-collar workers. Still lots of ways to do well with physical labor jobs.                                               thought this might be of some help
Reply:thanks smokke, that was a big help in most of the information i was wanting.. i was wondering,if i was to open my own welding buisness and hire other welders and in the same shop have a place that i could fix diesel engins and have a rental place that rents out heavy equiptment and big rigs (getting that large over a certain amount of time of course but when all said and done it will be that big) how much would someone make off of that kind of buisness?? i just need a guestamation..

Reply:A welder will make a decent living but to really make the big bucks it takes a special type of drive and risk taking.  From what I can see the big dollars in the future will be in more automated processes.  Robotics. seam tracking and orbital welding are becoming common.     Someone who can operate orbital welding equipment as well as owns the equipment could make a good dollar contracting repair jobs that are labour intensive when done manually.  The catch is that you have to have the connections in industry as well as the skill and expertise.   Oh Yeh ... You also have to be willing to continue working when all your employees have gone home for the day.  You have to be willing to risk your life savings every day.  The really succsessful people don't really have time to walk around with a high maintenance woman on each arm and drive to work in a one hundred thousand dollar vehicle.
Reply:yeah, you guys have a point..but im not the type of person let the shop manager run the buisness while im out playing golf or something like that(i can never see myself playing that) if i would risk my life savings every day, then i'd be the first one in there and the last one out of that place every day workin my *** off..and i forgot about robotic welding machines, you dont much hear about that kind of stuff around a small town like this, that is something that i'd prob like to get some expierence in..
