Ok thought ...well I will just purchase the same tubing material (od and ID)and weld in my yokes.    ........... well after purchasing my tube ;by the way is identical to the original, my thoughts are  "well these yokes are a steel cast and may need a special welding technique that Im not aware of.   Got that uneasy feelin I'm missing somthing here.  This is by the way a rock/crawler buggy machine spare shaft I wanted for the trail///// it never sees the road.  Just wanted a spare one.Anyway feel free to fill me on on something....my gut says there is a special technique weld it like you own it
Reply:We cut/shorten driveshafts all the time..Race cars to semi tractors..I used to just weld them with 7018..Now I tig them with 70S-2..Never a failure..The one in the 'Hoss has been in there for years.. Just make sure the u-joints are in line......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You can make a drive shaft with a piece of exhaust pipe welded with a coathanger and 2 batteries. After I payed for my first drive shaft and got the shaft, I have been making my own. Make sure it is straight, and weld away, stick, mig, tig, or glue. For a rock crawler, square drive shafts are super cool, and can have tons of colapse/extension.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:We build our own driveshafts for our stock cars and have not had any kind of failures as of yet. In my case we use a Toyota 3-TC motor and 5 speed tranny and use a 8" Ford rear, We have to use the small yolk from the Toyota and sleeve it and then slide it into the Ford drive shaft. We have used 6011's in the past but now we mig or tig the shafts with 70s-2 rod. DaveI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:Clean it, Weld it.  Like Zap said, make sure the u joints are lined up.  If not It WILL vibrate.  My dad and I use a level with the shaft in the lathe and the ways protected.  It seems all the yokes have a center in them already. I'dmiggit!DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Ok folks Thanks!!!!Just FYI these are 1410 ujoints..lol  Big unsSo the cast steel just treat it as normal and go to town ehh!!?    Just seemed it too easy to meThanks fot the quick replies PS If I tigged it? could I use er309 stainless? Keep me from having to go to LWS. weld it like you own it

Reply:Are you yokes cast steel or cast iron? In any case a good rule of thumb when not sure how to weld something is to preheat and weld with 7018. Preheating slows down the cooling rate and reduces the chance of residual stresses to cause cracking. Cast steel and cast iron have much more carbon than low carbon mild steel. I would say preheat and weld with 7018
Reply:the guy at our local weld shop dumps a quart of 10w30 oil in the driveshaft before he welds them up. not sure if it works or not? but the one he did for my brother years ago before i started welding worked fine. he claimed the oil would go to the low spot and balance it sort of like a fluid dampener on a harmonic balancer. not sure if it works for balancing or not just what he does. maybe someone else with more experience on here can say so.

Reply:He would have to tip up the end to be welded.  Sounds odd, but I can't say it won't work. I've always seen balancing weights spot welded to the sides of stockers.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Seems to me that it would make it worse. Wouldnt the heavy side want to swing out and then wouldnt the oil go to that side?. Got me wondering---

Reply:To balance big truck tires, they pump a few (an exact amount depending on tire size) ounces of sand in the tire.  It works.MY DRIVESHAFT IS LEKING!David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I would think centrifugal force would force the oil to the outside and coat the inside of the driveshaft. It sounds pretty interesting, I want to try it...
Reply:well in my last adventure with a drive shaft , the most important is makeing sure it is 100% true if not you get the nasty vibration ,thats why on some you will see a washer or more welded here and there for balance, if its a good weld or bad if its out of balance it will  fail at some point I did a road side repair on one in a 1ton chevy about 10 years ago used a stick of 7018 after I beat the flux off and oxy fuel to weld it back, a week of more later I hered the shaft was taken to a drive line shop and all they did was balance it
