Gidday At trade school were up to single v butt - joints. I'm not sure why as I've breezed through our other joint practice but the single V has been causing me grief!I've been getting either no penetration at all or blowing through causing unsightly blobs of peno on the flat side of the weld.My preps been pretty inconsistent with my V groove being +- 30-40 degress and a root gap of about 1/8 inch (3mm)  I've asked around a bit and scoured the Net n been thinking of reducing my root gap closer to 1/16 (2mm) with the V preped right on 30 degreesAny tips on nailing this joint really appreciated!Regards LouJust do the best u can with what u have at the time
Reply:I'm a little confused about the details, but spend time to prep the joint very carefully. Nice smooth bevels are easiest cut on something like a track burner. There's other ways to cut bevels, but clean up the joint meticulously. Get all the millscale and rust out of your bare metal joint before tacking it up. Use a wire wheel to clean up after tacking, and grind any tacks that are directly in the weld zone. Over 1/2" thick, preheat the joint to 150 degrees with a torch first.  The root pass is the most important to learn to get right. Wire wheel the joint clean after each pass and do not overheat the work. Take off a glove and put the back of your hand close to the piece, if it is burning from 6 inches away, let it cool down for 10 or 15 minutes.  Some of my practice vee grooves...City of L.A. ReplyHelp needed mastering the single V Butt joint!OU WHAT ROD ARE YOU USING FOR THE ROOT,I SUPPOSE 6010.IF SO DO YOU USE A FEATHERED EDGE AS SHOWN BY T D or do you have a landing.try 2.5 gap 1.5 ish landing,this allows you to keep the amps up and still have control over the keyhole.keep the rod well down in the gap and if your not keeping the keyhole open just up the anti a bit till shes right.its much easier to blast through with these rods than the alternative of low amps wide gap and no land,this is a much better plan with 6013, though i would still reccommend a slight land.i hope this makes some kind of sense.pipefitter,Last edited by pipe fitter; 09-23-2007 at 09:36 AM.

Reply:I was taught to make the gap 3/32, we used a piece of tig rod bent like a boomerang and tacked in in place.  Are you putting a landing on the bevel's edge? This was supposed to be 1/8 wide.  I think that would be non-feathered according to the posts before me.  Also try hooking your clamp directly to the plate to avoid any arc blow (blow out)I hate these butt joints so bad, we always had to practice them with out a back plate and I never mastered the keyhole in my root pass.  When I graduated the last test I was able to use a back plate, then it was easy.Laura MM 180Chop SawDewalt grinderhelpful husband
Reply:A minimum of 60* included angle is best.  That means 30 and 30 on each side.  When I took the 3g, it had to be 22.5* on each side.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Use a "nickle" root gap, and hold your sides when welding. If you can cut the plate on a bandsaw you will be thanking yourself.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
