We have a job that requires brass cap rail, and we have been having serious issues with inconsistencies in the brass. We have had problems with it cracking both hot and cold, sometimes in areas that have not been worked yet. We got our cap from Julius Blum, which is supposed to be one of the best sources, but we were wondering if anyone has had better luck elsewhere? Also, does anyone know of a place to get brass cap rail in something other than alloy 385? a more forgeable alloy would be much better.Also, soes anyone have any tricks for working with the bronze cap that they would like to share?..especially tricks for welding it without dying from zinc fumes?thanksMPHeat it and Beat it!!!http:www.Fallinghammerproductions.com
Reply:i'm not sure about compatabilty during welding between brass and bronze, but woudl it be bossible to braze these two together for your application? i know that when i worked at a tool & die shop, we used all bronze or case-hardened steel. the bronze was very workable and pretty forgiving, as long as you knew where to work it. we never did much welding with it (no need), but it may be an option? i'm not really sure about price either. i was never in the purchasing end of the material and even if i was, the prices are always fluctuating.as far as not dying from the zinc fumes, use a vent and resperator. that's the only way that i could imagine, unless you used a welding cabinet.hope that helps,Later,Andy
