Custom Mailboxes

I have been considering making custom mailboxes for quite some time.  The question I have is in regards to market: is there one?  Is there anyone here who makes or has made custom mailboxes and/or posts for them and sold them?I'm not looking to get rich by any means, just make a couple dollars on the side.  I figured I would make up a dozen or so of these and attempt vending them at the local swap meet.  I just don't want to spend a lot of time and money on a project like this and end up with 12 mailboxes in my yard I cannot unload .Any thoughts? Thanks in advance Welding Web users .Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:Is there a government rule for everything? Maybe not , but there is one for Curbside Mailbox Design. You might want to check out http://ribbs.usps.gov/files/fedreg/usps2001/01-2232.PDFif your'e going to sell mailboxes. Basically, if it doesn't piss off   the rural carrier, no problem. Just make sure it opens/closes easily, flag is easy to see/operate, and the opening doesn't have any edges to impede putting mail in/out.Last edited by Oldgeezer; 04-24-2008 at 03:50 PM.Reason: Screwed up first oneMiller MaxStar 150 STHTIG Advice From Co-Worker - "Just don't burn a hole so big I can't fill it."
Reply:I was in a local fireplace and patio store about a month ago looking at something for a customer. They had a large array of mailboxes to choose from. Perhaps if you have a place like that nearby you can go talk to them about this.I know the "iron" looking cast mailboxes are popular in my area. People pay big money for them. The township also pays big money to get them fixed after the plows blow them over. You would think people would learn after the 2nd or 3rd time that the box is to close to the street? When I was in the patio store acustomer came in looking for someone to repair their mailbox that had been trashed. Again you might be able to pick up some of this work.I also know that at the big antiques/crafts flea markets near me there is a big demand for welded artsy things. Wind chimes, lamps, house names and numbers, gates, plant hangers and so on. This is here, I don't know about your area. This is YUPPIE central in Bucks Co Pa near New Hope PA / Lambertville NJ. I have no idea how nutty the people near you are.
Reply:Thank you for the replies!  Basically (forgot to add this in my original post) I would probably buy the actual mailbox itself, and make custom stands and whatnot, maybe paint them up cool, that sort of thing.  I have also had this ODD urge to build lamps too, for years man lol.  Since I was like 15 I have wanted to build custom lamps, and I can't figure out why.  I didn't know there was a market for them either!  Valuable information .Oldgeezer - thank you for the link!  OMG could there BE any more rules??  Wow, that is insane!  It seems the pdf file listing all the requirements to be a police officer, or Military Sniper would be less verbose!  Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:I contemplated making my own mailbox with a locking drop box below, similar to the Armadillo models I've seen.  The finished unit, not counting the post, would have been 36"x20"x9". I also wanted the appearance and rust barrier provided by powdercoating;  most paints available in CA just aren't serviceable IMHO.  When I priced what it would have cost to have my creation completely powdercoated, I changed my mind about building it myself.ScottMiller XMT 350 CC/CV w/gas solenoid opt.Miller S-22A wirefeederBernard 400A "Q" gunMiller Spoolmatic 30A / WC-24C-K 200A torch/gas lensWeldcraft WC-18 watercooled torchHypertherm Powermax 30Victor O/A
Reply:I think the market for custom mailboxes is out there. It is the yuppie cul-de-sac communities where they all compete to out do the neighbors. Some of them have agreements to all have the same boxes, and if you got in on one of those you might have a pretty steady gig, and repair work.I work on roads, and as far as I'm concerned, a mailbox should either be easily removed, or mounted at a distance of 1' behind the top of curb so that it does not get damaged as easily, and does not interfere with road work.
