All this yappin' about full penetration and all..When is the time for minimal penetration?..Keep it clean.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:When stick welding overhead door track braces to 14 gauge perlins, actually when having to stick weld 14 gauge anything.
Reply:When it is a temp job, like a sheetmetal panel you will have to remove later. Or, a panel that should come off in an emergency. Another time?? When there is some very flammable stuff behind what you're welding!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Hi All,I have used minimum penetration when I am repairing aluminum gear that I can't clean the backside on. Too much heat and it all goes to crap when it pulls the contaminants through from the other side (fish oil mainly). Minimal penetration in the beginning, and then i can get hotter a bit when I am into other passes.-Ryan McEachern
Reply:Originally Posted by worldsgreatestwelderAs defined by the procedure, in a CJP minimal penetration is to the far side.As defined by the procedure, 1/4" fillet "to the root and not necessarily beyond"Why ask welders this? This question should be directed to the welding engineer. All welds have a procedure associated with them. Be it a written and qualified procedure or not  a "recipe" is followed to make that weld. What is called for in the procedure? This is your answer. Nothing more.

Reply:On 14 ga. whay even ask. As for highly flammable substances behind it: Do ya wanna die? As a general rule commercial welds require 100% penetration, non-commercial requires 50%. Now keep in mind every weld and the loading it takes is different. No load one pass is sufficient, after that everything changes. I have made welds using 3"shed 180 pipe and 6010 root and hotpass, filled and capped that held 126,000 plus. If I had known what they were doing I would have refused, but that being said I finally decided maybe I really do know what I am doing, lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Welding Titanium pipework at the moment and any penetration on the root over 1 mm (approx 3/64) is rejectable.Cutting a 300 nb weld out because you have pushed a bit too much wire in is not fun.I feel quite sorry for the contractor, but specs are specs.Cheers,BB
Reply:Smart aRse  So long as it's all there (just) I hate to give anything away including free steel.I work on minimum all the time when it comes to welding.  'If the inspector isn't moaning about the cap then your putting to much on'this rule works for the root to....I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:When I replace the exhaust on my truck, I won't put up with any 'droop through'. I spent too much time watching NASCAR and want that last .0000001 HP. It's a full size Bronco with a pop-up camper. My garage is at 5810 feet above sea level and everything is 'up' from here. No air, no HP. I'm either pulling a boat, motorcycle or snowmobile trailer. We unload the snomo's at 10,600 ft. I think my 351 has about 6 HP up there. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Reply:I build custom signs, almost everything we do is 6061al. Minimal penetration is preferred anytime there is a weld on the backside of a visible piece. The heat marks left from welding are a bear to sand out, if you want a nice paint job. I usually weld pretty hot, with a high travel speed. Most of the time I can get a nice weld that way without distorting the other side too badly.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!

Reply:When you are stick welding a "steel" (read tinfoil) door back on to its hinges because the screws pulled out of the flammable foam core.I'd post pics, but am way too embarassed to say I did it.A very important electrical room was able to be locked overnight.
Reply:Have you ever had to bridge tack stainless pipe and your boss doesn't want waste Argon??  That ia a great time to have no penitration!!  If you have no penitration, you have no suger and then the tacks are easy to cut out when it comes time to weld out the joints!  I hate Bridge tacking!!!  Jonesy
