water tank

i have a water tank from a water heater that i cut in half to use for a water tank to mix my round up with while on the job (i am a landscaper).  i have it welded together and i tested it and it had a couple of leaks so i put some wire in those spots but i just cant get the last couple of spots to quit leaking.  isnt there something that i can put in the tank to seal up those spots to prevent from having to keep grinding and welding.

Reply:Any type of liquid sealer you put inside an old crudded up galvy tank isn't going to stick reliably.
Reply:You can use 2 part epoxy putty to patch the leaks. PB7 or PB11 comes  to mind right away. Grind / sand to clean the area as well as posible and then wipe down the surface with acetone to remove any oil or paint residue. Wear rubber gloves, the stuff will stick to everything as you mix it. We frequently use 2 part epoxy putty to temporarily fix leaks underwater so we can pump down and patch with steel. The grind and weld would be my 1st choice but this will work in a pinch if all else fails.
Reply:Grind it and weld it.  Keep in mind that roundup is highly corrosive.  Alot of people do not know that.  On the farm there is a special pump used for roundup.  if you have roundup in the tank if you do not clean it well before welding then that can contaminate our weld and make it harder to seal up.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:it will not have round up in it.  the tank will just hold the water for when i mix the round up in my back pack sprayer.  i thought they made something that you can mix with fluid and it will seal any leaks in the tank.
Reply:JB weld it...
Reply:There are epoxy coatings out there that are designed to seal up corosion in tanks. I have not worked with them personally. My guess is that they would be sort of pricy for your use. It would most likely be cheaper for you to just buy a new plastic 55 gal drum and use that then spend the money on a coating. We have frequently used old 55gal drums for mix / wash water on job sites. We put a 3/4" nipple with a ball valve on the small bung and fill thru the 2" bung. A drum tipper is also nice to have. Ask around alot of times drums aren't that hard to get for next to nothing.
Reply:You might try a product called Seal All. They sell it at the Depot. It`s really tough stuff. I fixed a crack in the bottom of a plastic gas tank on a riding mower for a neighbor several years ago and it`s still good to go. I think it would work great for that tank. Good luck,   Bob
Reply:Are you MIG welding?  Grind it to base metal, v-out a little, start/finish your beads away from the holes...  I ran a welding shop for several years....guys brought in all kinds of 'mystery' tanks to make things out of....anything galvanized has to have every bit of the zinc removed or you get major porosity..  DougDougspair
