Hi,I am currently residing in Alberta Canada (born and raised in SoCal for 30 years).  Family here is thinking about moving back to the states(Eugene Oregon).  Yesterday we received our sponsorship approval papers(yay!).  My wife and I are currently living off our income from selling a previous business(Can't legally work until Permanent residency is approved)The schooling here is by NAIT and is a 3 months course.  Then its apprenticeship with on the job training/experience.  I have found schools in Eugene, however from what I am understanding the training is 1 year for a certificate.  If our approval for permanent residency comes through before the end of the year would it be advisable for me to take the welding course here and do apprenticeship until we are ready to move back to the states?  Would any training I earn here and experience be considered when applying for any AWS certificates or other welding certificates?I have a passion for welding and want to get to work on my future as soon as I can, but don't want to take training here and have it wasted by taking courses here that won't be applicable in the states for my career. Thanks in advance!Last edited by DrmChld; 03-17-2009 at 12:51 PM.

Reply:Well 3k is a different story. For that money, you could but a welder and a book and still get the experience.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug

Reply:Unless things have changed since i took my apprenticeship in Canada it will be 3 years until you are given a journeymans certificate . The training you will recieve from NAIT or SAIT will be top notch plus you will have all the experience of working around journeymen while serving your apprenticeship.
Reply:I know the Canadian government sucks on there policies on immigration . You or your wife mustnt be criminals or otherwise you would have had your documentation already and you have a good grasp of the English language. Good luck with that though!!!!!!!
Reply:The three month course at Nait would give you the basics.  There is a demand for welders in Alberta and you are in the drivers seat in that area.... only problem is getting work permit.  Once you are working as a welder you will encounter many welding tests even before you have gained your journeymans papers.  Most welding qualifications are recognized across the border.  Shops that test welders to ASME  ( pressure tanks)  or CWB ( mostly structural) are recognized below the 49th.  Canadian Welding Bureau and AWS have a reciprocal agreement... with a little bit of documentation and sometimes a refresher even a welding inspector can transfer across.    AWS is trying to standardise training but I have no idea if they are having much success between each state.  In Canada training across provinces is being standardized so that if you took first year training and apprenticeship in Alberta they would recognise it in Saskatchewan.   If you had massacred a few people or maybe been a member of some midnight abduction/death squad in your home country we would have given you credit and made you a full Canadian by now.  Heck you might even have gotten into the Mounties.. They seem to love people who can lie especially in a court room.
