i would like to know if anyone has any information on the relevance a 3 year technologist degree will hold in relation to a full Bachelor degree in welding engineering if i chose to continue to that level, i have only talked to 1 school and sofar they say it doesnt hold much relevance and i would need to start a bachelor degree program from scratch and my technologist diploma would be seen as uselessthanks for any info.
Reply:I can't say about that specifically, but many schools are not to willing to transfer credits. I found this out the hard way years ago. When I transferred from Drexel's Architectural engineering program to Phila. U's architecture program, almost none of the related classes transferred as usable credits. They would give me credit as electives, but not anything related to my major. Even "simple" things like Calculus didn't transfer well. In the end I still ended up going is a a "freshman" as far as my major classes were concerned, about 1/3 the "core" classes in english and so on would transfer, and almost all my electives were wiped out with what would transfer. Made it a real PITA to try and fill a FT schedule of classes and not take useless classes that wouldn't help me move forward in my major and simply suck time away from the classes I needed to pass. The only "good" thing was that I had more credits than even 2/3rd the students in the class above me. It made getting 90% of the classes I wanted in my schedule easy. The last 10% I usually had to fight for because there were only one or two sections that wouldn't conflict with other classes I was taking. You will need to look hard at what the school offers and fight to get them to allow you to transfer credits  to similar classes. It's not in their best interest to "give away"  "free" credits. They want you to pay for their classes. Go armed with detailed explanations of the courses you took, combined with a good understanding of exactly what IS required in each class. In some cases it might be possible to "test" out of a required class, if you can prove you have already learned those skills. Don't hold your breath however. Chances are they will only work with you so far and then tell you to take it or leave it. Some schools are better than others in this regard. While it sucks to have to retake classes, the good thing is that you probably already have the knowledge. That means chances are decent you'll get better than average grades if you apply yourself a bit. It's nice to have one or two "easy" classes where you really don't have to put in a ton of effort to pass. It will allow you more time to concentrate on those that you are unfamiliar with..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:wow, thank you for the information, i was told i would possibly beable to skip year 1 if i proved i an well versed in calculus based physics, chemistry, and math, so perhaps with high grades and such i can perhaps knock another year off and only have to do 2 yearswe will seethank you for the elaborate response though, much appreciated, have yourself a good day
