Hi, I am rebuilding a 5X9 foot steel layout table for welding and other things in my shop and am wondering about utilizing some of the space underneath as a spot to store my 75/25, argon, and or oxy-acetylene bottles. I will probably mount my tig or wire feed in the space as well. Question is can I use these bottles in a horizontal position safely?? Ive seen them mounted at an angle on rigs in the past but not sure about using them laying down in a permanent configuration like that? Thanks for any help, I appreciate the input. Robby
Reply:Acetylene has to be used in an upright position! As to your other bottles being under your welding table I would caution against it. If you drop your stinger with a rod in it you could have an arc strike at the very least. Same goes for a wire feeder if the trigger is bumped, running your wire out while you are busy with something else. At the least, you will have to pay for a hydro and maybe more for any damaged bottles. It's a nonstarter from where I sit. Reply:they use oxy bottles laying down all the time, but your acetylene needs to stand upright or you run the acetone out, and that really frosts the gas supplier and he takes it out on your wallet. CO2 bottles need to be vert. also, or you get liquid CO2 comin out, good if your making dry ice. pretty sure argon is the same way. Make sure your regulators are protected from anything that might fall of the bench. You could just make a spot to chain them to the table standing up, but I like them over chained in the corner, away from the arcs and grinders.kilroy was here
Reply:Ok, I thought I heard something about the acetone leaking out 1 time but I wasnt sure. Thanks for all your help.
