I am new and never welded before and I want to make a bbq pit/rotissary pit for hogs.. can anyone tell me a beginner set of equipment i need to do this? im deployed and dont have time to read through all through all the helpful topics im sure are posted. ps. just the basic kit to get started.. I can learn how to do it on my own thanksadam

Reply:I suspect many folks would vote for a MIG.I would vote for a simpler setup based on stick- DC capable stick welder (220v).- autodark helmet (don't bother with passive shade)- chipping hammer- 7018 rod, both 1/16 diameter (for thin material) and 1/8 diameter- welding gloves- welding jacket- face shield & safety goggles- 4 1/2" angle grinder- cutting and grinding disks for grinder- soapstone for marking the steel- sander (orbital or disc) with sand paper- high temp paint- a few good clamps, (C style or vice grip style)- Northern Tool DVD on ARC welding (get both #1 and #2 if you can)- Finch or some other book on weldingYou will want enough scrap to practice on. When you are new to welding it is a good idea to test your ability to weld a specific joint with the same material you are using BEFORE you strike an arc on the work piece. Reply:The best way to learn is DIY!Just starting out, a 110 mig, an oxy/fuel cutting setup and a grinder with1/4" grinding disks and zipcuts as well as a power brush; a welding helmet , possibly a chipping hammer. Tape measure, square, level, clamps, soapstone/silverstreak, determination, gumption and persistance! Last but not least (arguably the most important item!), a digital camera so you can post pictures here! Reply:I would either go with a small mig with flux core or else a small stick welder but go with a 6011 or 7014 if you are just starting out. A small grinder to cut and polish and go from there depending on budget. The nice thing about metal is you can always cut it appart and redo something if you dont like it. Most important is cold beverages, and time to think and plot it out.
