hey nowi just got a b-tank and am making a little unit to lock them in to (because i store it outside).my question is for 1/8 thick angle thats 1"x1" , when welding the pieces together (pretty much i just cut a tab out of each end on 2 pieces, about 1 1/8", so that way the 4 pieces of angle forms a seemless square. for those short welds, 1 inch butt welds and 1 inch vertical up, am i better off using my 7014 rods and just making a series of short tacks? am i better off just welding a normal bead? am i better off using a rod where its good for staring out doing vertical down and going right into a butt weld? (i read that in a description of 6013)the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up
Reply:Get yourself some 3/32 6011's (AC or DC) or 6010's (DC) depending on what your welder is, and go to it.  You don't need 70,000 psi tensile strength to make a tank cage.  Make a normal bead, vertical up or down it doesn't matter.  Making a stick weld by joining tacks together is generally bad practice, so I wouldn't do that.  If you don't have experience with vertical up welding, don't try it for the first time on a project.  You'll want to practice that on scrap.  Vertical down is just fine for what you're doing.
