Here's a few pics of a "hand me down" I got from my father. It gotta weight close to 100lbs, 8.5" cutter. The tag says "Maker East London Engineering Works London England". Stamped into the right side is a "1940" marking, is it a safe guess that's the year it was made? The old girls in need of a restoration, I'm going to try the washing soda/battery charger trick to remove the rust and repaint. I'm open to suggestions/tips.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Interesting. Electric weld at the top jaw anchor.Weld and rivet on the angle iron base anchor.I wonder how it made it state-side?How's she cut?Don't let the kids get near it with your truck! Good Luck

Reply:Sweet!  I love old tools.  However, I think that's really Big Foot's nail clippers.The 1940 could be the year of manufacture or a patent date.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:If it were mine, I'd probably disassemble it and sandblast it, (first covering the plate and blades with electrical tape), using the blast cabinet I happen to have. Otherwise, I'd likely use the angle grinder with a 2 1/2" wire wheel, then maybe finish with Naval Jelly or some other Phosphoric acid product to convert any remaining trace of rust to a more stable phosphate, and finally repaint it.
Reply:I've read that electrolysis is a non-destructive and safe method of rust removal, I've never tried it but have heard good things from some who have. I have a sandblasting cabinet also but the 220v is not hooked up for my compressor yet. I figured I'd use that as a back up if the electrolysis doesn't work out. I will be cautious to preserve the plate and blades. Thanks fo the suggestions I do appreciate it. Here's a link to info on the process for those interested.http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoep...lyticrust.htmlIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Ok, so I'm an idiot  Just how does it work.  I can't figure out by looking at it.  Only thing that moves seems to be the straps attached to the handle.  Are those the cutting edges?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:thats a rebar cutter for concrete work boss used to have one. its ment to bolt to the side of somethin so the jaw faces up. I have cut alot of rebar with one of those. our was bolted to the side of the forms trailer
Reply:My brother in law did use it for that very purpose for a few years I was told. It does have a notch at the back of the blades that I suspected was for rebar/rod. Thanks kneedeep! If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:I got a question for you kneedeep, did yours have a similar "foot" for holding down the flat stuff? I suspect it is suppose to move or swivel. Mines is jammed and I don't want to start beating on it unnecessarily. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:I use electrolysis all the time with great results, you will be pleased. My advice, make a tank just for thus purpose.  I used a 55 gallon plastic drum, wired SS strips around the inside and make a rack to hang parts from.  Its so handy to have around.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:the foot is supposed to be stable. its there to keep the rebar from popping out of the jaws and smackin u in the face. u have to slide the rebar in from the side then sheer it off.
