Using E6013 on steel how many amps do i need to get a good bead going..? my welder goes to 90. do i need more..?
Reply:Amps needed depends on the size of the electrode being used and to a lesser extend the type of weld and material thickness being welded.Here's the Lincoln Electric Stick Welding Guide - a free download.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...ld37/c2410.pdfRough rule of thumb is amps = diameter of the electrode in decimal inches x 1000.1/16 = 0.0625 -> 62 amps5/64 = 0.078 -> 78 amps3/32 = 0.09375 ->94 amps1/8 = 0.125 ->125 amps5/32 = 0.15625 -> 156 ampsWith only 90 amps, you may struggle a bit with 3/32 but for certain 5/64 will do a fine job.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:ya.. i got 1/8 rods. thanks for info
Reply:Nice try Rick, but that doesn't hold true all that much.To the OP.. We need to know if you are running AC, DC+ or DC- to give you and exact answer.From Lincolns's PDF on their rods ( available for download on Lincoln's site..)Fleetweld 37 6013 AC 1/16" :  20-45 amps5/64" :   50-80 amps3/32" :   75-105 amps1/8" :   110-150amps5/32" : 160-200 ampsFleetweld 37 6013 DC+ or DC - 1/16" :  20-45 amps5/64" :   45-75 amps3/32" :   70-95 amps1/8" :   100-135amps5/32" : 145-180 ampsYou will find the suggested amp settings listed on the rod package. In general you usually set the machine for the mid point of the suggested range and then adjust from there based on how the rod is performing. Note that sometimes rods with the same AWS number might have slightly different suggested settings. Lincoln has several "7018" rods that they produce. I see suggested settings for 1/8" 7018 starting at 90-150, 100-140, 110-160 depending on the specific rod.So if you are using 1/8" rods your machine won't put out enough juice most likely. You may or may not be able to run 3/32" well depending on if your machine is AC or DC, and how well that particular machine runs.Last edited by DSW; 07-14-2011 at 05:00 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
