My "Art" Projects

First, I want to say what a great board -- full of great ideas and helpful hints.  I've been "playing" at welding now for about a year. Started with a Miller stick welder and just bought a Lincoln 135 plus mig welder.  Only had that about 2 weeks but love it already.  Here's a couple of my projects. This is about my 3rd "heron" project Attached ImagesLast edited by JustLearnin; 12-01-2005 at 11:46 PM.
Reply:This was my attempt at a sunflower -- got a bit carried away -- had to get a bit of help to set it up! Attached Images
Reply:Here it is set up. Attached Images

Reply:Methinks  "JustLearnin" is a bit of a misnomer.  Nice stuff. We'll be hearing from you again I'm sure. Welcome!!

ReplyMy "Art" Projectsretty cool!  I think you could teach us a few things there!
Reply:I agree.  Justlearning is a ringer...well, maybe not a ringer, but he is definately more creative than the average bear (i mean weldor).  That sunflower is fantastic.  There is a guy in a small town where I live that does a bunch of metal working art.  His name is Gordon Chandler.  Google him and check out some of his stuff.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:nice work man !!!Bonez
Reply:Very nice work, top notch, top notch!
Reply:Thanks for the kind words -- what you can't see in the pics are the sloppy welds -- I can stick stuff together, but it's not very pretty.  I need more "scrap" practice, but just can't keep from trying to build something so I skip the practice and play with my ideas.  I'm hoping the mig unit will allow me to do more "lite" metal work -- tend to just blow stuff away with the "stick" welder even with tiny diameter rods.  I seem to either not get a weld that will hold, or vaporize my work.  I won't abandon the stick but I'm a bit afraid I'm taking the easy way out instead of putting in my time to learn to do it right. So far the mig has impressed me with being able to work with some lite sheet metal.  I'm working on a dragon fly this weekend and hope to use the mig wire material to make the "web" pattern on it's wings.  Sort of like a spider web.  A few test runs so far seem to be working about half the time.  I'm thinking that if I can stick it on one end, cut some small groves in the rod making up the frame to define my pattern, I can wrap it and then tack the end.  What usually happens is I'll screw up the last tack and have to start from scratch and end up with a pile of wasted wire at my feet.  -- but it's cheaper than dinner and a movie. Thanks again.
Reply:I often use the copper coated OA rod in various diam. GREAT SUNFLOWER!!!
Reply:JustLearninBeautiful work.  Great creativity.  What type finishes do you use?  What is the center of the sunflower?  What size metal are you using for your dragonfly?  Is it is around 1/4" and assuming you have a O/A torch you can tack with an  torch, you don't even need filler metal.  If you need filler and are using solid wire in your mig then you can use your mig wire.  To tack with your torch, just get a puddle at the joint and blend the metal together.  It only takes one hand, too.

Reply:man that thing would cut your face off if it fell on you!!!! But very nice work though just be careful when mowin' the grass
Reply:You can show your art in April at  The American Welding Society Show.www.aws.com

Reply:for outside you can use Por 45, I believe its a DuPont product I have never used it but have a friend that works with it all the time.. Its a bit spendy but not to bad... also prep is important it must be applied to clean rust free metal... when done properly it works great.... I'm just about to finish my first artsie project and will treat it with Por 45...
Reply:I thought my sunflower was large, the one I made is about 7' tall the stem on it is made out of 1  1/2 inch pipe. I wanted to make it tall enough my neighbor could always see it. He likes growing sunflowers and when I would tell him the one I grew stood taller and stayed standing all year round he got a chuckle out of it. Looks like you put a lot of detail into yours it looks very nice.
