hi does anyone have experience making ss manifolds? im thinking about making a single turbo manifold for my VG30 300zxthis is wat i have in mind the passenger side header is Stock..so im thinking about backpurging, 1.75 inch runners and 2inch crossover pipe with ss t4 flange and ss head flanges that im going to machine, does anyone have any suggestions or hints for me.. ikno thers allot of professional welders hear

Reply:Manifolds arnt too difficult to make... If you dont cut yourself too short.  You can buy kits online with all the elbows and flanges you'll need.  http://www.speedaction.net/inkitcoairin.html is a good example.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

ReplySS turbo manifoldsh,l thats simple when ya know what your doing

Reply:Nick, there are places you can buy the elbows, and all the other fittings.  It's not impossible to do, at all. Best advice I can give you is: Set it up, check for fit constantly, and build the thing with as many sections tacked up well, THEN weld it up solid. You will get less distortion this way. Start with the flanges and the downtubes. For headers, do yourself a favor, and get solar flux, AND set yourself up for backpurging. You'll likely need both before you are done. Last headers I built were for a bike, and I got the flange work set up well, then the downtubes, all tacked. I got them to the first y of the 4 into 2 into 1, and then went back and carefully welded the sections up, a little here, a little there. The tubing moved on me still, but not badly. A little manipulating, and I got a good fit for the next sections. I took my time, and it helped a LOT.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:whats solar flux? is it for the back side of the weld?

Reply:Hi Nick-you have your work cut out for ya ....my best advice would be patience patience patience..Rojo made some great points...as far as materials are concerned... the pieces you'll be sourcing are called j-bends or u-bends.  If you find a good supplier they will carry a dimensional array of the tubing in several grades of stainless.  check this link outI would also suggest picking up some alignment sleeves.  Hooker makes them in every diameter you'll ever need (click here for link)lastly...if you don't have the means to cut out the flanges for you application, have someone with a laser, waterjet, or cnc machine to precisely make them for ya.  Also, don't cheap out on thin material for the flanges...or they'll warp horribly -Graham-Mechanical EngineerAutosport Mechanic/Fabricator

Reply:Check out this company Burns Stainless they sell all the stuff that you need, and they even have a article on making exhaust manifolds thats very informative, it even goes into manifold design theory and some engineering tips. 304 ss is pretty expensive though I ordered their catalog with plans on doing my own FMIC piping out of 304, haven't gotten around to doing it yet.http://burnsstainless.com/TechArticl...struction.html
