I was just wondering if using a piece of 1/4" steel diamond plate turned upside down would be a good surface for welding on... I noticed the other day while welding that my plate has a gradual bend in it. the plate is on a plywood deck and I was wondering by welding up to 165 amps would cause it to bend like that. I was given this steel plate by a friend and I will replace it with a fresh straight plate if it wont bend/distort. I was welding some tubing and I cant get anything to come off perfectly flat because of this...Miller Diversion 165Rage 2 Chop saw

Reply:so you dont think my amperage will warp the plate? I would hate to grab another sheet and have that happen to it. Im gonna see what I can get for cheap that is nice and flat.Miller Diversion 165Rage 2 Chop saw
Reply:heat will cause warpage..it is reversible..try laying some weld on the other side of the plate,,,
Reply:I understand that but do you thing I should try to get a piece for 1/4 plate? maybe put a few pieces of channel under it so it acts as a buffer and cools quicker? I dont think that plate that was given to me was ever flat and I definitely dont wanna try to weld on that uneven surface....Miller Diversion 165Rage 2 Chop saw

Reply:You've got to have reinforcement underneath and still hope for the best. If you do anything heavy and repetitive you'll get spots on there that are spit sizzling hot. Just the way it goes. I've got a 1/4 inch top and some decent reinforcement and have still humped it pretty good several times. Sometimes it self heals and flattens out, couple of times it hasn't. Build it, use it and when it's too bad to live with, scrap it and build another one. It's a work table, a tool, you're not marrying the dern thing "untill death do us part" and all that. Reply:im gonna try several pieces of 1/4 plate laid on some 2" u channel that is 3/6 thick. Hopefully I can make something that will be nice and rigid with the ability to clamp down work. Im picking up the steel on friday will post pics when its done.....Miller Diversion 165Rage 2 Chop saw
Reply:The heating and cooling cycle when you work in the same spot will warp the area over a period of time. What is the thickness of the plate that is warping? Plate tops are usually thicker or are channel to last longer against the warpage.Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand
