Here's the story!Last night just after diner, I called an old friend of mine that is big time into the flee market sales thing, where he himself sets up a booth. Not really part of this story but oh well!anyway! He asks me if I could use a hydraulic cylinder or two, and a bunch of scrap steel, a friend of his had sold his house and has moved to Montana, and left a bunch of stuff behind, and the new owner wants it removed.I said sure, he said meet me at my house about 7:00am and we will drive out there so you can take a look.so, I get up and around, meet him at 7:00 this morning, we drive out to the country about 10 miles south to his friends old house, and lo and behold, there is treasures everywhere I look!We first started loading up for me to take 10 hydraulic cylinders, big ones that took both of us to pick up and load just one, about a 2" bore by 18" stroke, and a very heavy duty body.and I got several 3x3x 3/16" 12' pieces of box steel, a good 4x4 sheet of 3/16" diamond tread plate, a couple of 2x4x1/8" sheets, a couple smaller steel bars, a 2x2x1/8" 8' box tube, and a bunch of that unitrack or E track or whatever you call it, a smaller pneumatic cylinder, some air valves of some kind, and had to quit cause the tail of my pickup is sagging! We are going back out there on Tuesday or Wednesday and picking up a big 4'x8' table with 1/2" thick steel top, with a 2'x3' hole in the middle and walkway grating in the hole, "Like the one pictured below" a drop pan under with a drain in the middle for placing a bucket under to catch oil, and it has a big USA made "Not sure of brand yet but looked like a Wilton" vice attached to one end, I will get pictures of the table after we go get it!And I might just get me some more of those hydraulic cylinders and some more steel if I can.Heres a few pics of the load as it sat in the back of my truck after I got home this morning! All told, I basically paid scrap price for the whole load! And yes, those hydraulic cylinders are in working condition. Reply:That's a good haul.  I have something similar just waiting for me.  It's FREE too.  It is an entire care wash system.  Some guy bought an old gas station that had a tunnel car wash.  They dragged the stuff out to make the building into a car detail shop.  Most of it is 4x4 tube, 2x3 tube, LOTS of 1/4 plate, hydraulics, and a bunch of other stuff.  I don't know what to do with the hydraulic stuff, or the big generator/turbine thing.  I just want the steel.  They said I could have it, but I have to take it all.
Reply:There ya go!!!  Good score.I almost cried but I had to leave thousands of dollars worth of hydraulic cylinders behind when we moved to Texas just over ten years ago.  Among others there were (2) three stage units (about 6"bore primary) and (2) 4"bore x 10'stroke babies.  Couldn't give them away even though I did find a good home for my (2) hydraulic hose crimpers and selection of fittings as well as my 7T truck mounted crane, 25,000# Ramsey hydraulic winch w/150' of 5/8" wire rope, a bunch new and take-off Twin Disc and Rockford clutches and some other goodies.Sorry for the hijack.  Your thread just brought back some memories.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:That's what I mean!  All I want is the steel, but I HAVE to take it all.  I know my wife will have a fit.  I guess I could put it all on Ebay or CL.  Someone might want the stuff.
Reply:Sorry about that Mark! Reply:These cylinders came from Hayes wheels manufacturing. The friend of mine, was one of the maintenance guys and that friend of his was the head of maintenance there when they closed the plant. These cylinders he said was used for opening and closing the outer doors to the big mold presses they used to make the aluminum wheels! Those round plates on the end is what probably threw you itsgottobegreen.I have plans for some of these, like a wood splitter, a hydraulic lift crane, a bender kind of like a shop press with a bending break, maybe even a pipe bender if I can come up with some dies!I may clean a few up and sell them, if anyone wants any, I would sell them cheap!#1. Reply:A log splitter would be cool, truck jacks too.  I'm sure you can find use for them.  I think I can come up with a use for that heavy grate too.
Reply:I think that grating is going to go over the center drain hole in the floor of my new shop at the new house,The shop is a 40x60 pole building that right now has a gravel floor, and I plan on laying concrete in and installing a central drain so the floor can easily be cleaned, and that grate would work great over the trap.I was hoping to score some rebar, but no luck there yet!#1. ReplyScored!HD= Piled Higher and Deeper. That's a great haul you have found there. If you don't have room make room. just thonk you may need every cylinder there one of these days to make something just because somebody told you you can't. How much for 10 of them  just kidding (somewhat)
Reply:I am really debating that aspect! If I do get all of them, in a few months I will have to move them again, when we make our move to the new place!I don't know, hows $20.00 apiece sound? #1. Reply:This is how it works out.The cylinders I am buying at $10.00 apiece, all the steel and anything else laying around that I want to take is free, so I figured since I can only load about 15 of those cylinders at a time into my truck because of the weight, he told me last night that there are about 50 or so of those cylinders still out there, it will take me 7 or 8 more trips out there to get all of them plus all the steel and that big table.I am using about $10.00 in gas on each trip or there abouts, so if I sell the cylinders for $20.00 each, I am not really making any money if you figure in my time involved, I would be just breaking even, I will just have a bunch of good stuff left over after selling some of those cylinders that I would be able to consider totally free! #1. Reply:If they cost you 10, and you have to handle them, transport them, and then sell them for 20, don't give up your day job.  You aren't exactly making anything.ETA:  Even if they don't cost you a cent, I wouldn't ship and handle them for 20.00Nice haul!     Ken Dennis - The cylinders could be low pressure or pneumatic,. or have some unique internal option.Probably should take one apart for inspection before getting too deep with them.Jc'sWelding - The car wash will probably have lots of stainless and aluminum components.Good Luck

Reply:Here is what I have found out about these cylinders. These are manufactured by Parker, 2H series heavy duty special order with HH-MF5 mounting 4" bore 2" rod 18" stroke power push with return. All this according to the Parker web site using the numbers stamped in a plate on the cylinderI measured one and it is a little over 22" long not including the round plate at the end.#1. Reply:Heres one for the books! That guy I got this stuff off of finally called me back today on that big welding table, he talked to the guy that owns it and the guy doesn't want to sell it to me cause he wants to cut it up and sell it for scrap to the scrap yard. Now, I ask you, does this make sense? So, I told him, ask the guy if he would sell it to me for scrap price, and I will save him the trouble of cutting it up and hauling it down to the scrap yard.He is going back out there tomorrow morning and will talk to the guy about it and give me a call after he does!So hold onto your hats till morning, and we will see what other nonsense this guy comes up with. And here I thought this was all a done deal! #1. Reply:Yep!Hayes Wheels!went out of business here about 2 years ago. They had a few guys still on until late last summer, tearing machines apart and loading them up!Well guys!I didn't get that welding table, the guy gave it to his uncle. And by the time I got back out there, all the rest of the cylinders where gone except a couple that where no good! But, I did manage to get these things though! More free stuff! The first is a heavy duty Oxy/Ace cart "Like I need to tell you all what it is"No it isn't a Greenlee or a Safe T Lite, it was made by a company not far from my house here, over in Berne, IN.Someone had changed the wheels on it, and they are a inch or two too short and too small, so I will need to see if I can find some a little bigger, then sand it down and re-paint it!Then, I got these cool old belt sheaves or pulley's "depending on where you are from"and a 12' heavy log chain with an old hook. So, it wasn't a wasted trip back out there!
