just a few cages ive built recently, its a full custom mandrell bent cage, made from1 7/8th tube, for the main structure, and 1 1/2 tubefor the rear diagonals and door bars. all mig welded.Full custom mandrel bent cage. 1 7/8 tube very tight to the frame and pillars, barely even visibleas you look in the door, maximum visibility for the driver, cage tight against the roofand pillars.large floor plates welded to three different planes to spread the load for maximum strength.large front floor plates and some weld shots.
Reply:and another one. this one was a bit more extensivewith the rear turrets, dash bar and x door bar.same material and welder.

Reply:Nice looking cages but I presume you're not finished putting all the tubing in right? There needs to be a horizontal tube running from side to side behind the driver with a diagonal to triangulate. In case of a hard roll-over, the cages you show would collapse down! How did you weld the top of the cage with the roof still on?Last edited by The Flash; 06-22-2009 at 06:46 PM.Reason: added moreFlashhttp://flashracecarbodies.com
Reply:these cages are only for local non fia events, so they dont need to be to fia or msa regs,i suggested the extra bars for safety but the customer only wanted the bare minimum to pass local regs. i welded the top of the cage by cutting two small holes under the main hoop, dropping the hoop down 4 inches and then welding around. then hike the hoop back up in place, slide in the large floor plates, and weld the rest up. its 3mm floor plates, and there welded to three different planes on the chassis so there more than strong enough. id only take off the roof for a major roll cage.
Reply:I don't know anything about roll cage regs, but I thought it had to have one right behind the seat for the seat belt?Nice work.  Hey, that steering wheel is on the wrong side!
Reply:yea, what is the harness going to be strapped to?what type of competition is this car going to be in?
Reply:Ok I understand what you did now with the top. Thats why I was asking about the tube behind the driver. For strenght & to mount the shoulder harness! And I can't figure out that steering wheel either JC! LOLIt looks good roco for what its going to be used for. Not familiar with those sanctions. I've been building dirt-track stockcars for 20 yrs. is why I asked in the first place!Flashhttp://flashracecarbodies.com
Reply:nah its cool, im always open to constructive criticism, ya learn something new every day.the cars are used in time attack, its its a sport taking off here in ireland where basically guys make racing modifications to road cars to a certain extent, ie handling mods, roll cage, etc, then race them against the clock around local and national circuits. its fun because because its cheep and the guys get sense of achievement out of building most of the cars them selves, oh and thats why the wheels on the wrong side, were right hand drive over here in ireland,
Reply:Sounds like a lot of fun.  Are these your cars?  If not, what do you charge for building the cages?  If it's that big of an up and coming sport there, maybe you could be the "go to" guy for cage building!  Just get good at them, use references, and learn those codes and regs like the back of your hand!
Reply:Saw these up on Zilvia.net.Nice work!
Reply:nice looking cages roco! well done! by the way, my wifes family came over from ireland, they still have a house there and visit often.

Reply:Nice fit up and they look very good.Do you have any trouble getting the sound deadening off the floor before you weld the plates in. I was talking to a friend recently and saying what a job we'd had years ago to get it off a Nissan for a production class race and he told me that his son had been doing it with a boy racer car and they used a CO2 fire extinguisher to freeze it and then it chips off real easy. Are all the cars second hand Japanese imports? (that's what they use here - Mazda DOHC Turbos and Honda Integras and Imprezzas and Evos and the Nissan GTIs)Is it like a sub-culture there?"One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:How did you lay a bead between the pipe and the body panel? It seems like there was less than 1/2'' clearance in some places. Did you weld the pipes onto the plate first and then just weld the plate?

Reply:thanks guys,  lol, i only just about understand irish. its terrible really,  yeah you can use dry ice, but its usually cold enough in ireland to just get a screwdriver and hammer and crack it off.
