Been working/stooping in the garage without a work bench, but that's about to change. I took some time off of working on my jeep this weekend and found a fella selling some scrape angle iron pretty cheap and spent the day fabricating a frame for a new work bench. Notice I didn't spend much time on the rust other than where I had to join and weld, but I'll get it cleaned up here shortly. I know this ain't much of a project compared to what I've seen on the forum, but my back is going to appreciate not having to stoop to the floor when I'm working on stuff. It's going to be a hybrid work bench/welding table. I figure on putting plywood on top with some metal over the side I might be welding on until I to make a dedicated welding table. Reckon I ought to check and see if the fire extinguisher is full first.Feels so good to burn a stick from time to time. Some of you fellas on this forum are sure spurring me into getting some stuff done, and I sure appreciate it!

Reply:I got a little more done Saturday morning. I got some more practice welding the extension rack that will slide out of either side of the bench to support chop saws and to weld on. This is going to be a wood working / metal working hybrid bench. There's not telling what I'll be using it for. I'm working on creating a cam in order to lock down the extensions so that they run true parallel to the bench top. Doors and top coming soon. As simple as this project is, it's giving me some good practice. I was having some trouble burning holes in the 1 1/2 .125 square tubing at 90 amps on the old lincoln stick. When I lowered the amps, I still had trouble controlling my puddles. I have a healthy respect for clean welds and the art form required to create such.  After my troubles, I switched over from the 6011 that I had been using on the rusty iron and picked up a 7018 stick was able to get a much better looking bead. Still rough consider I was changing angles and making short runs joining up the tubing, but I'm happy with the results considering my lack of abilities. Running beads on a flat object are so much easier. Having to think about stick control and directions on different angles caught me off guard and is something I need to work on.  I'm having fun and looking forward to a new workbench custom fit to my wants. Here's a couple of pics.Last edited by Texas Dave; 07-27-2009 at 12:21 AM.

Reply:WOW, I like that slide out tray.  What a space saver, just be sure you don't put much weight on it or it will sag.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:It won't sag if he puts a flip-down leg on it, or has a flip-out support from the bench itself.  Nice work on that, like to see that cam setup once you have it working .....

Reply:Now that looks like one heavy duty table. You should be able to pound on that all day and then-some .Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Wow that looks great!  I love the slide out extension, that is a really good idea.  I think I may just have to head out to the shop one of these days and build myself a bench.  Just wish I had the room to put it somewhere haha.Thermal Arc 210Thermal Arc 95SLincoln Weld Pak 100
