I did the job in the following pics yesterday. Years ago a local muffler shop brought in a pipe they could not weld. I experimented and found 309 and 316 worked well. I have welded several each year since this time. I decided to find out what the hell these are made of. A search turned up a Ford bullitin on the same pipe! States to use 409 to weld. A little more searching showed that the pipe is 409.409 is an ferritic stainless steel309 and 316 are austenitic stainless steelWelding ferritic with austenitic filler will make the weld more ductile.Next one that shows up will be welded with 409 as per Ford bullitin.The lowest cost aftermarket pipe like this I have found is about $380, from Ford its much higher. There are 4 catalytic converters on this thing. Visit your local Ford dealers and muffler shops, maybe could get some work?Peter Attached Images

Reply:GM and Chrysler use the same material but there heat consentration is in a less stressed part of the system so its the mild steel after and before it that fails and is a cheaper fix.

Reply:re: 409 stainless steel409 is probably used as it is typically one of the least expensive stainless alloys available.A listed 'typical' usage is for vehicle mufflers and exhaust pipes.  It's pretty much just some iron and a minimal amount of chromium in the alloy to make it (barely) stain-less.  There are trace amounts of other elements in the alloy, some controlled (like sulfur and phosphorous) to minimize adverse alloy properties and some (like silicon and titanium) to get beneficial properties in the alloy.As castweld already said/posted/knows, 409 is a ferritic stainless steel alloy and 304/308/309/316 are austentitic stainless alloys.Weld filler alloys recommended for welding 409 include 309 (adds some nickel into the weld pool and overmatches the base metal chromium percentage, also 'straight' 309 has a higher carbon percentage than 409 and thus a low-carbon 309L may be better suited) and 409.  316 adds moly to the puddle, as well as nickel and overmatching chromium compared to the base 409.Lincoln (welders not cars) lists a 409 gas-shielded (98-2 argon-O2) metal-core wire, but in cut-length GTAW filler it's probably just 309/309L unless you can find cut-length 409 GTAW filler. Noticed the witness/clocking mark on the pipe(s).  You're a half line-width off.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
