Crab sure is spendy and I think it would be a fun build
Reply:What type of crabs are you looking to trap?  Dungeness?  Not sure what's available in the water near you.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.

ReplyAny crab pot builds out there?efinitely not stainless. Mild steel possibly aluminum
Reply:Awe I never like them.  Always considered them junk or trash crabs.Edit:  Be sure to show the crab catches in the fishing thread.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
ReplyAny crab pot builds out there?on't want it too light or it'll blow around when they try to grab the bait.
Reply:That’s why I was thinking steel and just paint it
Reply:Steel round bar frame. Chunks of rebar for weight.Stainless safety wire for mesh, Dungees will chew right through twine web.http://www.customcrabpots.comWrap the round bar frame with inner tubes. That’s how the commercial guys do it. Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkDo you really know all of the work that goes into getting that fish onto your plate?
Reply:But will it outperform a $80 pot?I try to keep my pots in the water 5 days a week in July and August and I’ve trial and errored all kinds of pots including the ones in your picture and I get more keepers in the lightweight 3 door enameled steel ones. I get 3 years out of them but lasting forever is way down the list.
Reply:I have a crawfish pot with a strainer basket and a lid, but I'm sure it would work good for crabs, too. It's an 80 quart pot. Attached Images
Reply:That’s a nice crab pot and food there

ReplyAny crab pot builds out there?ingy Dungeness Crabs at that.  Oh looks like Oregon has delays for the start of Dungeness Crab Season.I eat crab hardly ever but if I do You can bet it’ll be either king crab, snow crab or rock lobster or the big lobster.  Dungeness crabs look too dirty for me every time I see them.California says not to eat the guts of Dungeness grabs from specific regions as they may contain domoic acid.  https://cdfgnews.wordpress.com/2019/...n-opens-nov-2/Last edited by N2 Welding; 11-14-2019 at 09:51 PM.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
Reply:^ Who eats crab guts ? Dungies are delicious. More work than king crab for sure but sweet meat in there!Every time I’ve seen the Dunge crab at crab cooks they always had dingy brown looking color all over the shell.  Looks like they were cooked in scum water but in reality they were cooked in their own funk.  Anyway there was a time I wouldn’t snack on my girlie friends “ many many moons ago “ but these are apples to oranges comparisons.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
Reply:Califonia also says many many other things....  have you read the latest prop65 crap....  dungeness are pretty good! but like johnmm says a lot of work

Reply:[QUOTE=jeverich;8727168]Escape rings. Required by law. If your pot goes missing, it allows the crabs to escape. Well actually you are only partially correct. They are escape rings but they are only there to allow undersized crab to escape. The cotton string between the rubber band and door hook is there in the event that the pot is lost. The cotton is supposed to rot quickly and release all of the crab.
Reply:Ahhhh, I was wondering how them big guys would fit through those rings

Reply:Here you go moto, once you save up enough money to get a bigger boat like this one...Then you'll have the right outfit to go for the gold!!!! load up a bunch of pots like these...And soon you'll be catching more crabs than a group of cowboys at the mustang ranch on a friday night!!!
Reply:all the local crabbers get their pots from a place in Arlington WA or out of BC i can get the names but i know i'm not gonna compete with them. they have people that string that ss wire like an expert knitter, and they could do it blind.    i dont like ss pots as they create an electric charge or something that the crab dont like, commercial guys use them because they last and they have excellent bait so it dont matter much.   for me i use cheap pots and crappy bait, whatever looks the worst in the freezer. if i'm gonna stay on the water i just use rings. cooking dungi right i think is important. at the beach, i turn them over and break their shell on a rock and separate the halves and rinse.  then i always boil them in the water where caught with about half a red onion per 5 crab. boil pot is a keg with the top cut outwith a quarter turn drain valve at the bottom. cooking them whole is okay to do, but not my bag. beach water, salt water is my 'secret' ingredient. so much better than store bought.    vacuum pack for the freezer works well.currently working on a retrofit rsw refer system for a costal crabber, cod, tender vessel. so i doubt i'll drop a pot for a couples years. they like to share the catch, and i like that too. side note, last year i did a bunch of work for a king crab boat, its good, but i prefer dungeness. Reply:Tracymobliecnc, you ever try steaming them in a basket? I switched over from boiling a couple years ago, less than half the water, time, and propane. Agree on Sound water for the boil, not sure it matters for steaming.
