I have a lincoln squarewave tig and am having trouble starting the arc.  it seems like every time i want to start the arc i have to take out the electrode and grind it and reinstall and it will start again but only once before having to take it out again.  i checked the grounding connections and dissassembled the torch but found nothing obvious, the machine is very new no corrosion on anything, also when depressing the pedal the noise is heard that indicates it is trying to start the arc so i am a little baffled, any help?
Reply:What model Lincoln is your machine?Does the machine have a TIG/Stick switch? Is the switch in the TIG position? How is your High Frequency set?Rex
Reply:Are you by chance running pure (green tip) tungsten?
Reply:My Sycrowave 250 at home does that and so does the Syncrowave 250 that I use in class. All I have to do is: let up on the pedal, scratch the tungsten on my workpiece and try again. I wouldn't have said anything except both Syncro's do the same thing. I'm using a red tungsten in both instances. I think it's called a 'frosted' tungsten and I don't know anything else about the problem. Unless you can run the next size smaller tungsten without problems. FWIW: My Syncro has a HF knob under the flip-up cover; 1-100; I run it a mid scale.Maybe one of the new tungsten 'mixes' (blue, orange, gold, brown, white etc.) will work without the problem.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:Have a look inside at the HF points to see how strong they are sparking, they are prone to have problems with metallic dust tracking across the pointsCheers

Reply:Thorium, cerium, or lanthanum are added to tungsten to help with arc starting, arc stability, and increase the melting temperature and current capacity of the tungsten.Pure was recommended in the good ole days for AC welding aluminum with a transformer power supply, it balls up easy and the ball does not develop a split that causes and erratic arc like with 2% thoriated which was the other choice of the day.  Actually 2% thoriated works great with AC aluminum cause it can handle alot more current than pure, and if the ball gets funky you can just do a quick remelt on DC electrode positive (reverse polarity). For some reason, probably the lack of easy electron emission from thorium/cerium/lanthanum, and the lack of continuous high frequency with AC on new inverters, the inverter power supplies seem to have a terrible time running pure tungsten, the arc does not want to start at all and it runs all around up the tungsten and collet and frys this stuff. So, basically there is now, and never was, a good reason to try to run pure tungsten.
