ive kind of always wanted torch set, and thought i could do better with it then 130 mig welder- i read the forum threads on how small the tanks were on those porta torch setups- so i found internet tanks- 40CF of acet for $100 and 40CF of Ox for $120- also i see harbor freight has a basic set of torches for $100- so the whole system would cost me$320 plus whatever it cost to fill the tanks- so 2 questions- does this seem to be a good price for home use? and being tank stupid- would buying it like this- the gauges be compatible with the tanks?- john

Reply:I've seen rigs with maybe a 40CF Acet, an 80CF Oxy, a torch and a cart go on local Cl for under $200. (Didn't last long.) Get decent equipment. If you get cylinders too small, it limits what you can do because of the Acet drawdown rule. You could always rent O/A tanks for a year while you look for a bargain."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Antiflashback safety check valves are a must no matter what outift you choose. I know some high end Smith and Victor models include them inside the body of the torch.

Reply:Jstrnck,You care enough to ask, which is good. Don't be hasty. Search around the forum. Get a passing familiarity with the major brands of O/A equipment (Smith, Victor, Harris, ESAB/Oxweld and a couple others). I'd shy away from the clone torch sets you can buy new for $100. But you can buy some name-brand sets for maybe $250. and good condition used stuff can be inexpensive if you know what to look for. Reply:My local suppler has medium duty Victor or Smith for $199.00. Buy quality once and pay the price. As far as tanks go, check with your local supplier on the torch set and tanks. Search the postings about tanks too. Each supplier has their own policies on tanks. Do your research BEFORE you buy.http://www.weldersupply.com/products...ipment|Outfits
Reply:thx- i wasnt aware quality would be so different- i do have a local welding store near me- i was there the other day and he had a victor or harris ( i forget which) real nice looking set for $250 on special- he said the larger tanks would run me $150 each over the 20/10 cf kit tanks
Reply:OK, don't confuse the tanks with the torch, unless they want to make a deal on the kit. If you want to do any real welding or cutting you don't want the little "plumber" tanks. Far from it. The recent medium Victor torch (100 FC) and cutting attachment are made in Mexico. There's another medium Victor # (Firepower?) that is made in who knows where. Still a cut above Harbor Fright I believe."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Keep your eyes open on CL. I've found some good deals on cylinders in the past. I've picked up "B" size actylene cylinders full for as little as $15 on occasion. I've gotten a few 80cf - 125cf cylinders for $60-100.Here's one I found listed in your area. Not enough info given to say it's a good or bad deal. Maybe you can get the guy to give you some more info and maybe some picts and we can tell you if it's worth the money or not.http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/3600361476.htmlHere's an older one with a Victor torch set. Cylinders are really too small to do anything more than cut a small bolt or do very small welding projects. I'm posting it more so you can see whats available than anything else.http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/3582126685.htmlOut of your price range, but another example of what you can find if you keep your eyes open.http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/3582982788.htmlAnother old one with very little info. Probably too small.http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/3555456231.htmlI skimmed thru the rest and didn't see anything else current that was worth bringing to your attention. I did see some inexpensive O2 regs, but they are set up for medical O2. I used "torch" as my search term on Searchtemest and a random Pittsburgh zip code to see what was available..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
