Couple of ?s... need some opinions please.new guy here, looking at a part-time business for when i get off work been welding for 20 yrs and want to do some welding on the side.my plan is to work for farmers here in central Iowa. most of the repairs shops are closed at 5 and some not open on weekends,I am offering my services after the 5 pm hour I work tell 430pm 4 days aweek, and want to make services for after that time period. talked to some folks around my area, some think it might be a good thing, just wanting some help and see what ya all think.I am looking at a lincoln ranger 10000 or a miller bobcat 250 cause like i said i have welded for 20 yrs and I can stick, mig ,tig, braze so I want 1 of these products just want some opinions on these 2 welders.I want it this size for my truck and possible trailor. so any help would be greatly appreciated.KevinLast edited by kevinswelding; 02-20-2013 at 08:47 PM.Reason: change title

Reply:Not all that familiar with the Rangers. As far as the Bobcat it's  a decent general repair machine but it does have some down sides. While it's CC/CV it does not have an option for a remote. That means to run mig you will need a VS type feeder and can not use a remote type feeder that uses the 14 pin connector. Also because it lacks a remote, that will somewhat limit you on tig as well. The older Trailblazer might be a better choice, since they were AC/DC, CC/CV and had the connection for the 14 pin remote. The newer Trail blazers aren't AC any more for the most part I believe.A few thoughts on working for yourself. I know a lot of guys who can do the work, but have had their businesses fail. That's because they can't handle the business end of things. Also don't forget there's a ton of expenses that having your own business requires if you are going to do this right. These expenses are often the same whether you are doing this FT or only on the side. Insurance being one of the biggest ones. You'd be stupid to do much work without it these days as so many people will sue you at the drop of a hat, your fault or not. Then there's things like workers comp, taxes, SS, the new medical insurance requirements if you choose to incorporate, business licenses, commercial vehicle insurance ( get in a wreck and they can show you use your vehicle for "work" and you only have "normal" insurance, and you can bet they won't cover anything), accountants fees... Just to name a few things. That stuff adds up pretty quick. You will find all that stuff can eat up the money from a few odd jobs really fast. You pretty much will need to figure an a semi steady income from the PT work just to cover the basic expenses. Think you can run "under the radar" and do without, and get caught or sued, and you'll wish you just taken your money and tossed it in the shredder. It will be cheaper in the long run. A lot of places are cracking down on guys doing side work, since they are loosing tax revenue from "traditional" business as they go under..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks for info on the welders as far as the other stuff I am doing it all by the book and I am keeping my full-time job and my wife has a good job so if things don't right I have my other job am looking at LLC and being bonded so not just going in with both feet.
