Powder coat vs 2 part paint?

I work in a Chandelier and Lamp repair shop. Some guy brought in two outdoor sconces to be completely taken apart so he could take them to be sand blasted and powder coated. When he brought them back. I put them together. When he picked them up he told me the powder coat people said they could not do the thin galvinized glass frames. But did powder coat the rest.He said he used 2 part black paint on the glass frames.I could NOT tell that the frames were not powder coated. And I put them toegether NOT knowing any better. He said in the future he would not pay for powder coating when two part paint seams just as good.Did a google search of 2 part paint. Seams its used for garage floors also. Behr claims its amazing. But people say it bubbles if salt/snow sits on it. lol.Does anyone else have expeirience with 2 part paint? Cuz it sure is a ton cheaper than powder coating.ThermalArc 161STL TIG/Stick (160amp)Lincoln weld-pak 100 (fluxcore)4X6 Enco bandsaw10" skillsaw with metal blade for 45degrees (works)4" grinderWeld for fun. Reply:I use both.  I spray and bake powder whenever possible - it's faster, more durable and cheaper than the 2-part urethane I also spray.  Of course with doing powder, you need an oven big enough for your part and it must be able tolerate 400° temps.  You can powdercoat non-metallic items like glass using the hot-flock procedure. You have more color options with paint since it blends into a different shade - powder does not blend well (kinda like the choc chips in cookies). Some two part paints are bad for your health - the hardener is nasty (diisocyanurate?) and the mfgrs recommend a remote air source when spraying it.- "If ya can't be handsome, ya may as well be handy!"   HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln SP125+Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38
Reply:2 part paint can be a urethane or epoxy, but the powder coat will last alot longer and is very durable
Reply:2 part paint , lol.  wat about 3 and 4 part paint        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:Two part paint systems are highly durable.  Typically you use an epoxy base coat as a primer and water barrier and then a polyurethane top coat.  The epoxy is highly resistant to moisture absorption and has excellent mechanical properties but chalks when exposed to sunlight.  Polyurethane has a much better ability to maintain a shine when exposed to sunlight but does blister if water is held against it.  But, your cars are all done in polyurethane.  Their paint seems to hold up just fine.  The gloss reflects the UV so the shinier the paint the longer it will last.
Reply:I do a lot of powder coating for personal stuff. I built a circuit to control a kiln which makes the baking an automated process. I set it up where you set a peak temp for flow out and a hold temp for cure with times for each. It is also nice since I can do higher temp coatings. The headers below were baked 700 degrees. Powder Coating is generally a bit thicker then paint. Like anything else requires the proper prep work; generally sandblasting works best for most things; a clean gritty surface for it to adhere. I use it for many reasons; frankly simplicity. No paint fumes, I can degrease, blast and coat an item and be putting it back on in a few hours from when I started. It is quite durable but a good paint with hardener can be too; but you have a much longer cure time to deal with. You also have to deal with a warm shop for painting temps, fumes, etc. The shine on 2 part paints is typically far better then powder coating. Once messing with either, rattle can paint is darn near useless. There is a gloss which can be used and is required for some specialized coatings but it is a little more difficult to work with. The problem is the ground and the static attraction does not work as well and it is difficult to get the powder to adhere. There are some coatings which are really neat in powder such gold vein, silver vein and such. Matt blacks work real well and in fact I find I use the Harbor Freight Matte Black a lot. Caswell Platting has a very good supply of colors and such.
