I have been looking for a decent belt sander/grinder but all the ones I have seen for sale were either underpowered and/or really expensive. So.... I decided to try and make one( 2''x48") and this is what I came up with..... Reply:The top wheels are idler pulley's off of a 99 chevy s10 (2) exactly 3'', the drive pulley is a v belt pulley with one the outside machined down to fit inside of a piece of 11g 3" tubing. The motor is a 3/4 hp 1750 (havent done the math for belt speed yet). The rest of the sander is made from a 2'' and 1 1/2'' sguare tubing( teliscoping),some 1/4 and 1/2'' plate. I still have to make some gussets and mount it to a stand, oh and paint it also. Thanks for looking!!Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:I like that. How does it track?Tim Beeker.
Reply:I'm having a hard time seeing the sander in a few of the pictures.........
Reply:I think you will be a lot happyer if you turn the round rubber wheel down so that you can grind against it. Generaly when working steel that is the way a belt grinder is used. also at 1750 RPM you could easy run an 8 inch wheel on the motor and it would make the speed just right for steel. Otherwise it looks very workable Mac

Reply:Nice build but I wonder...1 No apparent way to adjust belt tracking while running,2 The belt does not appear to run over a metal bed; the belt appears to be simply foating between the rollers. How can you press a piece of steel against that and get a flat grind?Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:OK thanks for that update info DemonSpeeder. Yes, when the platen is built/installed, then you will have a Machine! Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Yeah I hope so.....the only downfall to building a belt sander/grinder is wishing I had one to use while building it(if that makes any sense)Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

emonspeeder do you think a 1/2 hp motor would be ok on this size belt?
Reply:It's actually 3/4 hp, But yeah I hope it is, if it isn't I should be able to upgrade it pretty easily...even if I have to make a sub shaft and use a pulley.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:I welded it all up today, and built the platen but I need a 3/8's tap and I also need to turn some spacers before I can install it...
